Default Introduction with the standard 28-2 date question

First an introduction (and backstory). Retired from the Navy (21yrs) in 2008. Been firearm nut my whole life. Found this forum in my search for a DOM for my 28-2 (I'm getting there, promise). I bought my first 28-2 HP #S237073 6" barrel in 1996-ish...regretfully had to sell in 2008. Bought a M&P .40 in 2017 and just bought another 28-2 (after 12 yrs of sellers remorse). It is a 3 screw 28-2 pinned 6"barrel #N44249 and it is BEAUTIFUL!! I am rough guessing (probably wrong) that it was a mid to late 60's manufacture. Thanks for having me aboard.

Welcome aboard! That's a really nice Model 28. I've owned two of 'em over the years and they are about as good as it gets.

Yours was made, given the lack of a diamond in the grip, between 1968 and 1983.

Welcome! Your first model 28-2 (S237073) was likely made in 1963. Your current one, if the SN is "N"442xx, is probably from 1970.

Go Navy!

Just to be clear as murphydog states, the “N” is part of the serial number.

Hoss405

Welcome to the Forum.

All postwar N frame revolvers had a letter prefix in the serial number. From c. 1947 until 1969, it was an S, rising as high as S333454. Beginning in 1969, the S was changed to an N, starting at serial number N1. The N lasted until the mid-1980s, when all S&W revolvers were transitioned to the three-alpha serial sequence.

So, when you supply a serial number for any postwar N frame revolver (K frames also), you need to include the letter. Eventually, I/J frames had a letter prefix too, but that came later.

If I missed it before, welcome to the forum. The 28 is a great revolver and it appears that you have a real nice one. I don't have a 28 in my collection yet, only have 22 other models. Regardless, it's a S&W revolver and, in my book you can't go wrong. Shoot it and enjoy it, I know you will.

Welcome to the forum, and glad you found another one. They are dependable ol' workhorses. I carried one for a number of years, and I gave it a good home after the department retired them.

Welcome, I do not have the S&W bible here, but I would say your gun was made 1971 to early 1972.

I am rather fond of the M28. It was my first revolver. $101.00 brand new out the door

Welcome to the forum from SW Ohio and Thank you for your service. The Model 28 is a great revolver and like you, I have a 28-2, serial # N238XXX, just a little older than yours. When can we expect to get a range report from you with it?
