Default Model 58 Value?

Hey all,
I'm wondering what the real world value is of a decent (not safe queen) condition P&R Model 58 .41 Magnum. I've seen some auction sites that want Bizarro World money for even rough ones. I'd like to make a bit of a light project out of prettying up an older one that's seen some serious duty use, not a full blown restoration or anything. But for well over a grand, it seems a bit much.

Thoughts?

Last one I tried to buy, back in the good 'ol days, you know, when there use to be gun shows, guy wanted $900. Gun was in good condition with correct stocks. I offered $800 but he wouldn't come off the $900. I think you should still be able to find one showing wear, maybe with incorrect grips, around $800, maybe less. Don't see them locally all that often though. Good luck.

A decent Model 58 should be in the $800-$850 range. That’s what I paid five years ago or so and was happy to find one. They are not all that common in FL. Good luck!

My currect 58 was purchased off Gunbroker by a fella who wanted it to trade me for mine. Nickel shipped in 1965 wearing incorrect stocks (58 had its own stocks). He bid $850 starting price and nobody else bid. I see them in the $800-$1,000 range. To me missing proper 58 stocks is a big deal on value as finding the right ones is a bear.

You're right about the stocks. Mine came with Pachs. I have to correct stocks on mine now, thanks to another Forum Member, but they came off a Model 520.

I paid around $750 for one that was reblued. If it wasn’t such an uncommon gun I probably would have passed. I haven’t seen one before or since

I agree with the $750-850 range, depending on condition for an N-prefix serial. If it is an S-prefix serial, I’d add $150 or so. I picked up a decent shooter grade (95%) S-serial M58 at the Lakeland gun show in January. The asking price was $950, but I traded him straight across for an M57 6” N-serial nickel gun that I bought a couple of years ago for $650. I don’t agree that M57’s are more desirable and command a higher price than M58’s. From what I’ve seen and from reading here on the forum, I think exactly the opposite is true. In my quest for an M58, I must have seen 10 M57’s for each M58 i saw. Here is my brace of .41’s

Good luck finding your Model 58. I've had mine for years and carried it during my LEO career.

I'd like to find a 4" Model 57 in order to round out my 41 Magnums.

Which agency did you work for? I know more than a few carried it, like San Francisco, San Antonio and Amarillo (my father was an officer then when they carried it), but not sure who else did.

A certain McNairy County (Tn) Sheriff carried one too.

This S serial numbered shipped with TT, TH, and TS as per the factory letter. I believe the Cokes are original to the gun but the letter only states TS.
$1000 ain’t getting it.

I have an S Model, but the TT, TH, and walnut TS were added, likely at the distributor to boost the price - my letter made me feel better about just shooting a nice revolver.

On the Riverton PD. We had to qualify with it before we could carry it and a few just couldn't handle the recoil, even with the mild police loads. Those that couldn't used the more common K Frame Smiths.

I think that for most officers it was a tad big and heavy, and to be honest and speaking as a former firearms training officer, the majority of officers were better off with a K Frame. I moved up to the 41 after discovering that the 357 wasn't all it was cracked up to be on the two way range.

I still shoot mine with cast 210 grain SWC cast bullets at about 800 fps. Shoots right to point of aim at 25 yards with the load.

I'm always curious as what they are worth too.
I have a nice one shipped May 1978.
Mine is obviously worth a lot more than the prices I've seen posted here.
$1000 wouldn't even make a good starting bid.

My M-520 and M-58 both retain their original grips.

I found a beat up M58 last year in a rural Utah pawn shop. I recall starting a thread about it here. Anywho, I paid around $465 for it. Significant holster wear and other assorted character scratches. Came with Pachmayer grips which I replaced with a set of equally beat up S&W combat grips from ebay. Other than too light of a trigger, it functions flawlessly.

TexasRaider, I'd be pleased to sell you this gun for what I put into it (i.e., gun + combat grips + inspected by my local smith= $700).
