These were first produced late in the -2 production era. A few are seen with a recessed cylinder and unpinned barrel, and a very few with both features. I would be surprised if more than a few thousand of both types were made.

My daughter can tell you more about unicorns.

Unicorn? Absolutely not.

From 1974 to 1982 S&W made P&R model 13s. That's 8 years worth of specimens out there. Keep looking.

If It were me and I saw something close, I would buy it and keep looking for the Unicorn

That way I would have a 3" to enjoy in the meantime.

Once the Unicorn is located, you could alwasy sell the one tha was only close to what you were seeking

Unfortunately that plan has not worked as well for me in practice as I would have liked.

I tend to just keep all of them

I didn't have to search. Got my unicorn thru a happy accident. It's not a "real" Model 13, but since I'm kind of a Neanderthal when it comes to untouched original firearms, it's good enough for me!
Not pinned, but recessed, and looks (almost) exactly like a 13....

I only have this ugly one without a pin or recessed. I’m trying to endure the trauma of no P&R. Pray for me.

Thanks for all the comments. A P&R would always be nice but I might have to settle for a 13-3. I happen to like the RB revolvers with three or four inch bbl. Coolest one I've seen was the Model 19 RB, 4" that they built for the ONI. FBI later got them and a buddy of mine on the SWAT team had one. Very neat. You just couldn't plug a 4" bbl. on a 2.5" either. Well, you could but it wouldn't look like the original. My favorite shooting revolver is a Model 10, pencil bbl., with RB. It is just perfect. I think the 13 or a 10 with a three-inch bbl. would be even better. It certainly doesn't have to be a 13, just a RB with 3" bbl. I've never seen a 10 in that configuration either, P&R. ))))))

I had one. I gave it to my then finance. When we decided to discontinue our relationship she declined to sell it back to me. I had to console myself with a 3" M66 a -2.

Here is a mod. 10 with a pin , but I don't think the 38 was ever recessed.

Just about any 3", 4", or 5" commands a premium. Buyer and seller decide.

Hey-I’m just being silly. I enjoy the three inch guns. I scored a nice 65-3 with the box accidentally in Tulsa last show. The 13-3 I bought on Gunbroker from a guy I know that has sold me 3 other guns. 4 inch and 2.5 inch K frames keep showing up around here. A good friend was USSS on Jimmy Carter’s detail. He’s old enough he’s retired from about there jobs.

I have seen one. I think it was in late 2013 at a gunshow in Jackson, MS. Seller was promoting it as being the model carried by Jody Foster in Silence of the Lambs. He wanted $500.00 for it - I felt I had to pass because I was out work at the time. Definitely pinned and recessed with a three inch barrel. I sometimes wish I had gone ahead and bought it anyway. I saw the seller at a subsequent show and asked him about it. He told me he sold it to someone who said he was just going to put it in his safe.
