Model 58 value ?

Advice needed ,I have a 98+ % nickel model 58 a friend wants to buy. I've checked the usual sites ,can't really find any comps. We're kind of in a standoff , Neither of us have ever seen another one. I got it in a trade some time ago and am not sure at this point what I have in it. We both want to be fair about it.

Its always tricky assigning a value. There was a nickle Model 58 in my local Cabelas marked $1100. I thought about it but it was gone in a couple of weeks. No box. I doubt they came down much.

I don't know but you could search the auction sites for sold prices for a blued Model 58. Standards Catalog states 10% premium for nickel.

If the nickel is nice, no peeling and grips are original and nice, you should get $700 - $900.

My nickel 58 shipped in 1965 and sold for $850 on Gunbroker two years ago. It was wearing incorrect diamond Magna stocks. I had to shell out $250 for the correct M58 stocks. But maybe I can get $100-$150 for Magnas. Finish is very nice. At some point somebody hung a target hammer on it for some reason. Don't know if that adds or subtracts from value. At the time this was purchased there were a couple other 58s from the 70s started at $800 to $1,100.

You could go several different paths.

Since you are friends, you could try to make a best estimate of what you have in it and sell it to him for that. Maybe add 10% or so for inflation.

I wouldn't sell a 98% blued M58 for less than $1,000, maybe $1,200 would be more like it. I'm not really a fan of nickel, but the book says add 10% for nickel because it is more rare.

Keep in mind you would have to pay a commission and he would have to pay a buyer's premium at most auction sites. Then there's shipping, FFL fees, and other costs. The two of you are avoiding all of this, so both of you could afford to be a little generous vis-à-vis each other.

I paid $1100 for this Model 58 nickel, in the box, and possibly unfired since the factory about two years ago. The gun is as close to 99% as it can be, but the box is ragged, but original to the gun.

Might have been high, but it was exactly the second nickel Model 58 that I have ever seen. Not saying they are rare or even scarce, just don't see them around these parts.

Here is a bad photo of my nickel Model 58 (it is in better shape than it looks in photo). IIRC I paid $700 for it several years ago. I don't think I could replace it for that now.

P.S. the grips have been replaced by smooth coke style grips from Culina.
