Bieuvenu! Your model 27-2 was very likely made in 1977. I gather it has a 6" barrel?

WELCOME to the FORUM! Nice 27 you have there! I still don't have 1! Do have a plain Jane Model 28, 6" from 1960. (basically the same gun with less done with finish to hold cost down for law enforcement etc.)
Someone will be able to give you a SHIP date. S&W's were not shipped in serial number order.
Anyway, your gun should shoot shoot quite well! Mine does. Bob

Welcome, too, from a Texas S&W collector. The evolution of your model 27 dates back to 1935 with what we call the "Registered" Magnum. They are the flagship. We aslo have a very knowledgeable French collector who frequently comes to our gatherings in the states. Hopefully, she will be reading this and introduce herself. Hopefully, this is your first of a continuing S&W collection.

What does the stamping above the trigger guard mean? It looks like a crown, or something.

It might be a Paris Proof Mark, I have seen similar proof marks on much older French guns.

Thanks for all your reply

It's a great gun. The trigger looks like a "match" when you press it.

I tested it yesterday at the shooting range.
Unfortunatly the rear sight screw just snapped when i shoot the first cardridge. Maybe she was too old or she has an old injury.
My gunsmith has some spare part. We see that together tomorrow.

Some one have the spare part list of this gun ?

Default Welcome from Virginia!

Hello Redemsky;

Welcome from Virginia to the Forum. You sure picked one of the finest revolvers S&W ever made to start your activity with those of us that collect, accumulate, shoot these fine, precision mechanical devices known S & W wheelguns.

What ammunition do you shoot in your Model 27-2? Do you have several choices of different ammo in France? Do you reload or always use factory ammo?

I too like the Model 27 and its predecessor, the "pre 27" (actually has a "S" in its serial number). As posted above by others, these guns are direct descendants of the Registered Magnum which is the granddaddy of all 357 Magnums.

You have a very desirable Smith & Wesson. We thank you for the photos, we love to see what other collectors and shooters have. Do you have any "backstory" about your gun? We love history of these revolvers too...how did you get it, did you buy from a friend or shop in France, can you import, etc.?

If you want to know more information about your personal owned Model 27-2 please consider at some time joining the Smith & Wesson Collectors Association, and the Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation. You may also wish to send for a factory Letter of Authenticity which provides you with original factory in formation on your particular serial numbered gun.

I'm posting some pics of my "pre 27" 6-1/2" bbl that shipped Oct0ber 16, 1952, and my blue 27-2 with 3-1/2" bbl that shipped April 5, 1977, and my Nickle 27-2 with 6" bbl that shipped in 1980.

I'm also attaching a copy of the Factory Letter of Authenticity that I received for the "Pre-27" so you can see some of the history about these fine guns.

Again...……...WELCOME from Virginia, USA.

Here is a parts list and exploded view of a model 27-3. All the basic parts are the same. The cylinder on a 27-3 is a bit different as it is not recessed for the rims of cartridges.

In the 70's in france you can buy a handgun for your personnal defense, with permission of gouvernement, when you have a risky job .
The preview owner was jeweler in Paris. So he buy this 27 for his personnal defense.
When the law has evolved in 90's this permission passed.

At this time he was retired. So he join a shooting club to keep his gun.
My gunsmith take in deposit when the owner was too old for shooting.
And y buy it for 390 € (about 440 $)

That's i know about this gun.

The approximate ship date would be sometime in 1977.

It has a Target Trigger and Target Hammer. Looks like someone fitted it with Pachmyar grips.

Do you have some recommendation about the rear sight ?

I think the rear sight adjustement screw has a malfunction.
When i turn it i hear some "CLIC" but no modification on the target

I think i change the sight kit. Can you help me to find a kit ?

Someone has already change his sight kit on his Mod. 27 ?

Thanks for the reply

Hi i am myself french and served my country back in the 90's in Europe with a fantastic FAMAS A1..

The crown mark is the french symbol that the revolver completed its proof shot at the St Etienne ballistic center in France. It proves that the gun is safe for its user. All weapons arriving in France must pass this test. As a kind of quality test... and i believe they keep the bullet as a identification tracker regarding criminal investigation.. but i can't confirm this.

I have myself a 6 1/2" barrel M27-2 3T's (from 1985). As per your pictures, i believe your baby is also a 3T (Target trigger, Target grip, Target hammer), 3 screws and pinned barrel. Excellent model. The -2 has been the best gen of all M27 ever.
Only issues i can see so far on your gun, a lot of scratches and you seems to not get the original square butt wooden grips that comes with the M27. I recently declined an offer for an marvelous M29 6" for this reason. It is very tricky and expensive to find those original grips in France. I paid my M27 around 850€ last September 2019. What about you?

I also bought (i was lucky) a gorgeous M27-2 scarce 5" barrel 3T from 1975 with it's orignal presentation case, user manuals and certificate. Only cleaning tools are missing but i'm on lead.. I paid 900€. You can see some pictures attached.

I hope you'll enjoy this revolver as much we do, it is an amazing American symbol and Icon of what USA has done good and well so far (including Commodore C64 and Steve McQueen).

Denis.
