Looks like someone installed a US Army button into the grips instead of S&W medallions. I'll bet the revolver belonged to a soldier or former soldier.

Might have been one of Pattons non-Louisiana revolvers?

If you're going to pay the approximate $900+ to have your revolver fully engraved, getting a custom grip medallion is a minimal expense.

You can also do the grip work yourself fairly easily with slow, steady use of a Dremel in a press jig and epoxy to seat the medallion.

Some aftermarket grip manufacturers actually used eagle logos of some sort in their medallions. Sile and Franzite come to mind. They give a reasonable impression of army buttons. There were likely others. And only some, not all these medallion styles had the company name in them.
