Target Grips Hysteria?
Not sure which forum to put this so I placed it here for the era of the grips.
I admit I am Grip Junky. Or maybe I should say a S&W grip enthusiast. That sounds better. That said I just watched a insane (to me) ebay auction for a moderately figured set of 70s era
N Frame grips hit a 531$ sale price. 4 bidders.
Not just 2 guys trying to best each other.
I've noticed target grips escalating in price recently. I thought this was an anomolly but is seems to a trend on certain grip types. I dont track other grip makes, just S&W grips, but this
auction got my attention with multiple bidders
bidding on a somewhat common 70s era grip set. The good pictures I'm sure were a plus but many pics are
also decent reps of grips. Wanting to get the
gangs thought on what you think of prices/
auction on these pieces. An abnormal spike or a progressive trend on factory grips these days. Am I gonna have to dig deeper yet again
on our chronic hobby LOL?
Best Randy..

I just saw that myself. As nice as they are, that’s still pretty unbelievable.

Yes, I saw them, and I have a screenshot of it, just for kidding with members on our FB S&W italian group.
Of course it is an abnormal spike, I'm concerned why two bidders fought for a regular set of football N frame targets: moreover no diamond… maybe they thought they were Cokes?

I`ve said it before,Older Smiths are quickly being priced out of the reach of many of us. If you see one you want,at a decent price, grab it

Looking at it on my ended watch list now
seems 4 bidders were on it while it was climbing the ladder so the "enthusiasm" looks like was a shared want to buy..
Thats why I asked about people driving up the prices on current auctions.
Most are a good bit higher than just a few months ago.
I hope it is just a " Momentary Exuberance ".

This might also be the result of stimulus checks and unusually high unemployment benefits due to Covid-19. Lots of people have lots of extra dollars to spend, so they will be more likely to spend their excess dollars in inflationary methods. Economics 101.

I think this is a case of
Too much money, too little sense.
I recently bought a model 25-2 with target grips. It was about 720,00 in US dollars.

Well if you are an aficionado they are called "stocks"
That makes them more valuable.

I am, and I generally call them stocks. But I think folks in Smith & Wesson themselves once in a while slip up and call them grips too.

Two pieces of wood cost more than the gun.!!
Started many years ago, the "grip harvesters" would take them off, put on cheap ones and then sell for twice the profit.
Ya sure they are nice but not that nice. Right up there with a box and some vapor paper.

Interesting. I recently decided to sell a box of "Football" Targets that have been gathering dust for 25+ years. Wouldn't expect to get anything close to that price but thinking Gunbroker is the way to go.

Well that, but also the folks who didn't want those uncomfortable plain old factory stocks and took them off immediately and replaced them with some nice comfortable "custom" Pachmayers/Hogues. Then put the factory stocks back in the "custom grips" box.
Don't see it happen much any more, too many of us looking for them, but I've bought several sets of perfect "as new" S&W factory stocks on eBay in those "custom" boxes offered as "Pachs or Hogues or whatever."

Grip mania
Well, I seem to remember quite a while ago seeing blister packs with those K-Frame combat grips hanging on the display boards at gun stores. They were covered with dust and you could buy them at "make offer" prices. I bought my J-Frame combats for $10 back then.
Times change, I guess.

If I get a gun that I want to shoot and it has wood grips, I take them off, not to sell, just cause I do not like them for shooting. Especially down here and sweat all over them. But I don't like Blued guns either,, they look nice but stainless is forever,
Pachmyers are the best

I try and find them still affixed to the gun, often cheaper that way. It started with the combats and has infected the target, including K frame targets aka bananas, which are running $150 to $300. I just gave $160 for these:

In every letter I've received from Roy he has called them grips.
Roy even called the Cokes on my 1964 M29-2 grips.
I call Targets "stocks" and Magnas "grips".
These are the beautiful Cokes that I recently bought for my 1960 6.5" M27.
I have no idea how much they might go for on an auction.
I'll never sell them or the gun.
George with Salt Lake Collectibles found them for me and I couldn't be happier.
I assume that my M27 was shipped with Magna grips.
The 1957 4" pre-27 I had was special ordered by H. H. Harris Co too.

Me too.
Well, I did. I gave several Targets for K-frames to two of my friends and a couple of early Culina Targets to another friend and pretty much sold the rest of them.

I do not buy many sets of factory targets anymore ever since my Roper addiction has set in but I did recently buy a K frame birdseye maple set that I have been longing for for years. They were on ebay and inline of what a nice set of cokes bring.
They are pictured with my other favorite target set.

Well we have different opinions there.
To me the "right" grips can really set a gun apart from others.

Not that long ago I was asked by another officer if I had "old S&W wood grips for a J frame". Seemed that he couldn't find any synthetic grips that worked for him and didn't pattern (he is a narcotics officer). I sold him a very average set that I pulled out of my "box of stuff" for $25.00. I also recommended he try the Tyler T-grip as a supplement. He went with my suggestion and is very happy with both the wood grips and the T-grip. I suppose I could have sold the grips for $50.00, but that seemed excessive. It's amazing how times have changed.

I for one am glad to see those stocks escalate in value. About ten years ago, I began buying nicely figured genuine S&W checkered target stocks and paid upwards of $160 plus shipping for some with an average at about $110. A few years ago, I decided to thin the herd a little and lost money on about half of them - not a lot of money, maybe $40 on all of the ones on which I took a loss - but I was disheartened to say the least.
Now maybe it's safe to buy a few more sets before escalate TOO much...

That set is a wonderful set. I would love to see the other side of those.
I do mostly prefer rosewood but on the right gun a light set can be very complimentary.

Wow... what a real find, I've never seen factory K-Frame Birdseye Maple smooth target grips.
I got these factory N-Frame grips on ebay almost 10 years ago, and have not seen another pair.

Beautiful grain on them. Are they modified factory grips? Looks like they are inletted a little just under the medallion. Also ever birdseye set i have seen has had flat escutcheons yours are recessed.
