Why on earth would I need this revolver? I don't even have any 45 Colt ammo.

There's ammo stores all over the place. Ought to find some .45C somewhere.

That's a fantastic find. I see a pinned barrel, when was it made? I thought the .45C models didn't come out until after the pinned barrel was dropped. Would live to have one like that to add to my S&W group. I prefer the .45 Colt to the .45 Auto for a revolver.

I think around '79 or '80. It is close to N800,000.

You "need" a .45 Long Colt because you are a Texan!

I needed one because I had about 125 rounds of .45 LC brass and nothing chambered for that caliber. Problem solved!

I just received 400, 255 grain Elmer Keith bullets from Missouri Bullet Co. and loaded them up to see if they preform as well as the Hornady XTP's and the Berry's 250 gr. plated bullets that I have been shooting.

Enjoy, they are great shooters and the "long tube" balances very well!

If you reload you can make it hot or as mild as you like! (within limits )

I just found a bag of brass and now vaguely remember owning a 1917 that was modified to shoot 45 Colt. Hmmm. Now I'm wondering where that gun is.

That's an indication that you may also have a forgotten .45 Colt die set. It likely has large throats so don't buy a zillion bullets before shooting a sample for accuracy. The stocks have great grain and the bluing looks great. Compare those features to current offerings and you might see a reason why you needed it.

Do we need a reason to buy a old/new Smith ?

1) You had the money.
2) It was available.

Because its fun to shoot!! I bought one a few weeks ago. I didn't need it either, but that didn't slow me down, just because it was a really nice Smith that I didn't have! I found it is really fun to shoot. It has oversize throats,too, but not by much. It shoots good enough for who it's for!

I bought some bullets from Missouri Bullet Company and found they mike around .453, so I think they will be better. Will load some soon.

By the way, it seems that these 8 3/8s Model 25-5s are uncommon. I wonder how many were made? Anyone have any idea?

I didn't need this one either. 10 years ago Dick (Dimonback 68+) and I were walking the Lakeland show just looking. I spied this one sitting on a table marked $800. Had 3 holes fired but no box, nothing with it. After much negotiation he said fine-$600. Looked at Dick and as usual he said: "I'm buying it if'n you don't." Friends like that will run you broke. There's also this stuff called reloading equipment and components. If you're not into that you should be! It's more than half the fun. I honestly don't know if I reload and cast so I can shoot, or shoot so I can reload and cast.

My brother owned a 25-5 with the long barrel. It was amazingly accurate, and very friendly to reload. There were no bad loads, just good to great.
We started taking out to IHMSA silhouette matches. I was shooting heavy loads out a Contender...30-30, 357 Herrett, etc.
My brother's 25-5 would put down the 200 Meter Rams with authority using a moderately light charge of Bullseye and a cast SWC!
It took a little longer for the bullet to get there, but it sure did the job!

He sold it 20 yrs ago, and I still regret not being the guy who bought it!

NEED has nothing to do with it.

My 8 inch 25-5 and the 25-3 (6 1/2 inch) absolutely love the 250 grain Tennessee Valley .454 RNFP and the 255 grain Hornady .454 JHP. Some other bullets don't do as well in these two guns due to the oversize throats.

I bought a 25-5 long barrel just because it looked cool. It had 12 rounds through it and was pristeen. I didn't need it either.

Shot like **** with std. ammo, but thanks to this forum I switched to 0.454's and now its a tack driver. The best part was the the 0.454's shot better in all my other 45 Colts so it was a super buy.

Best $500 I ever spent.

I had just the opposite experience. I shot all kinds of lead ammo through the gun with mediocre results. The most accurate ammo was (now discontinued) "Georgia Arms" 230 gr HP's. It was new ammo with what I'm sure were .45 acp slugs. Joe
