There was a discussion here somewhere, I can't find it, about stocks on Model 28s, target vs. service. I owned a 28, 6" and 27 5", both bought in 65/66. Anyway, both had service stocks. I've never seen a 28 that was new with target stocks. And I've never seen a 27 new with target stocks, that is until I became very old, suddenly, and the Internet was discovered.
So, I pulled out my 1959 Shooter's Bible and looked at the S&W section. I'm attaching a photo of the page. The 27s are displayed with service stocks, no mention of targets. And the 28 is offered with or without targets. The targets come at an additional cost bringing the total cost of the 28 to $90.00. It sold for $85.00 with the service stocks.
And, the 27 sold, blue or nickel, for one price, $120.00, all models described as wearing "checkered walnut Magna with S&W monogram."
This may be old news to the experienced collectors but I thought it was kind of neat pulling out the old Shooter's Bible.
