Welcome to the forum.

The way you posted your serial numbers is misleading. There would not be any model numbered guns with some of the serial numbers you provided. It is essential that you indicate the total number of digits after the K in the serial numbers.

Keep in mind that there were no model numbers prior to 1958. And the dash numbers came out at known intervals.

Here is a rundown of what I think you have.

mod 17 no dash,,,K336-- There would not be a Model 17 with only five digits after the K, so this one has to be K336xxx. That would put it in 1958, the first year model numbered guns were available.

mod 17-3 K3411-- This number (K3411xx) is also a 1958 number, so either it isn't a 17-3 or you typed the number incorrectly. The -3 wasn't available until 1967.

mod 17-3 6K264-- This one appears to be correct and is from 1974. Yes, there was a Model 17-8, beginning in 1996, but it was a very different revolver and it would have a three-alpha serial number, not a K prefix number. There is no chance it could be mistaken for a 17-3.

mod 18 K336-- Again, this has to be K336xxx (six digits) and that would indicate a Model 18 with no dash number, from 1958.

mod 48-4 27K92-- This serial number appears to be correct for a Model 48-4. It would put it in 1979.

Try comparing what I've given you here with the guns you actually have in hand and let us know what you find.

Ship dates based on S&W serial numbers Are best guesses! For estimates the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson provides a lot of information. The latest is the fourth edition. For an exact ship date you will need to order a historical letter. Many folks here are so knowledgeable that they can get pretty close!

I'm assuming the gun is a .22, so the serial# K253xxx falls into the range of K231xxx-K266xxx, which is 1955, so your gun is most likely a K22 Masterpiece 3rd Model and does not have a model number; it might be referred to as a "Pre M17". It might also be a K22 Combat Masterpiece, or a Pre M18.

In order to tell for sure which one it is, post some pictures; both sides and butt of grip frame.

Just giving a SN is no help in determining the model or caliber, as a particular version was not built in serial order. K serial numbers are shared by all K frame guns, after 1946.

Likely shipped in 1959.

1974, and it would be a 17-3.

Assuming it is K333694, it would date to 1958 or 1959 (shipping).

Mod 48-4 27k9222
1979. All 27K numbers were used in '79. It could have shipped the following year.

1955 is correct - hence, it would be a K-22 Masterpiece if the barrel is 6" long. If it has a 4" barrel, it would be a .22 Combat Masterpiece. The stocks would be diamond Magna, unless it shipped with target stocks (most of them did not).

At that serial number, it would still have five frame screws.

There is no reason for hiding serial numbers that I can think of, I know you have probably seen it done numerous times but paranoia is the only reason I can think of for doing so. If you ask others you probably couldn’t get the reason for them doing so, just an outdated myth. You own the 2 rimfire revolvers I covet the most that have appreciated greatly the past few years, lucky guy.

Agreed - there are those with tin foil hats that believe the govt has some database and at some time will come for you, your guns and maybe your pets - or someone will say the serial number you posted was stolen from them in the past and they want it back… some will advertise for sale and they will leave off a few numbers in their ad but include a picture of the gun and box with serial number in plain sight. Never know what some people are thinking…

It would be better if you started your own thread, rather than piggybacking on this one.

We have all been newbies.

Go here & click on "New Thread". Put in a title to your thread and then ask for the dates on your revolvers.
