Model 58 value
A local auction company has a Mod. 58, nickel finish, with the original box for sale. The condition is about 95%+ with some finish wear caused by former rubber grips on the right and left side of the frame. The bid is currently $850.00 with an 18% internet fee for a total of $1,003.00.
I appreciate the opinions of the members of this forum regarding the value of this revolver, based on my assessment of the condition.
Thank you.

You say former rubber grips, but not current grips.

With the original grips, depending on condition that might be a good buy. Model 58s to begin with were not produced in great numbers. Nickeled models significantly less. It all depends on condition and originality. Also S series guns will bring more than N series guns.
If you give us pictures we can likely tell you more.

The Model 58's Magna Stocks with the bottom of their sides rounded were only used on one other model, the uncommon fixed sight N frame .357 Model 520. Consequently, they are expensive to replace. You did not write if the 58 at auction has a pair.

M58
I feel pretty fortunate to have both, an M58 and a M520 with their original grips.
Sorry i can't help. I have no idea what a nickel M58 is worth.

Internet fees, buyers premiums, sales taxes, and shipping fees can turn a bargain into a disaster. All I can say is I wouldn't put more than $1200 in it total.

My opinion, for what that may be worth to you, is you are getting to the upper edge of reasonable, assuming it is in as good a shape as you think it is.

Those in good condition come along rarely. Even if you over pay a little in 12-18 months it will be worth more than you paid. I use this argument on myself to justify some of my buys. Works most of the time.

About three or four years ago I found this one at a gun show. It is absolutely pristine. May not have been fired since it left the factory??? It was in the box, but the box, while original to the gun, is not in pristine condition. I paid $1100 for it and its the only nickel 58 I've seen outside of many years ago when the NC State Highway Patrol bought about 400 of them and issued them.

Bill - I so well recall several times walking into Lawman's Safety back in the late 90's and seeing the LE-trade-in revolvers in their counter.
An old forlorn M58 sat there for many months, think it was like $240 or so.
But - I just wasn't into that stuff then, regrettably.

If we had only known. I remember when your agency traded in the 1076's and they could not give them away.
Al and I went on a gun hunting excursion a couple of weeks ago. I mused that he probably had an incredible collection. He said that he had had some great guns pass through his hands but had very few now.
Hindsight is 20-20.

Photographs, taken from the auction site, are attached. I have inspected this revolver in person. The grips are not numbered to the frame. The box is original and is in excellent condition.
There is, as you may be able to see, a turn line and I am confident that it has been fired but, it is very clean.

Nickel 58's are few and far between. Finding one in great shape in the original box is 1 in 10,000. You say that it has damage from former rubber stocks? That is a huge turn-off to me. I would definitely look it over really well. Maybe there is a scuff from the stocks that could be gently polished away? If it is pitted or the nickel plating is damaged, the value will plummet.
Here is mine. It is an S series gun. I value it at $1500, but would not sell it for that....in fact, it is NOT for sale. I do have the original numbered PC stocks, the stags were just put on for BBQ duty.

Without the original grips.
That might be a little high for that gun IMO. But you are not likely to see another one for a long time. I would likely get it if I wanted it.

Yes, there are numbers on one of the stocks but, they do not match the serial number on the frame.

Don't know but didn't argue. Probably just added to the box at some point.

How most of these guns lost their original grips is beyond me, and then its a heckuva search trying to run them down to try to make the guns period correct.....but it sure is fun. My 58 and 520.

I passed on the Mod. 58. Maybe I am to picky but, the rub marks on the right side of the frame, which I believe to be from rubber grips, were deeper than I recalled and there were two deeper scrapes that, IMO, would not rub or polish out.
For the amount that I may have paid, perhaps a better representative could be found. Congratulations to the new owner, it is still a very nice revolver.

There was one sold at an Hanson's Auction in TN this afternoon/evening for $875.00. I suspect it is the same one discussed here.

Model 58 grips?
I have a NIB nickel I've owned unfired for years. Could someone please post some pictures of the unique "rounded corner" grips that are correct for this model? I would like to dig mine out to see if correct.
Thanks,
SW

All but one of the Model 58s and Model 520s posted so far have correct stocks. The only exception is SAFireman's 58 which could not get leave from guard duty. His steak is well protected.

Proper M58 PC Magna stocks, and especially in 'diamond' configuration can only be described as sharing the same mystical properties as lost Tupperware lids, that single glove or sock that's missing, that one drill bit missing from your index that you actually need. Maybe the perfect pocketknife you carried that disappeared somehow/somewhere.
They almost are never found on a used/affordable M58. They CAME on it, but no one knows what happened to them. That M58 wears gummy Pachs, or Targets, or Combats, or some 1976 thrown-on Jay Scotts you wouldn't carry to a dog fight.
And 'bay sellers are inordinately proud of them - when they show up.
Took awhile, but thanks to great SWF member SAFireman, I was able to source a correct pair for my c.1965 M58, and didn't have to give up my truck or only child for them.

"How most of these guns lost their original grips is beyond me..."
Because they're terrible for actually shooting the darn things, and who knew there would be collectors of them 50 years later.

Bob - we all know that perception of recoil is a widely varying thing - I have large hands, shoot my M58 as well as a few other N frames with Magnas and have no problem. A caveat - many/most wear either a Tyler T or BK grip adapter, but I have no issues with them.

Add a grip adapter then they're pretty good for loads at the recoil level of the original police cartridge. My guess is they disappeared after owners used them firing real magnum cartridges.
Back in the 1980s and into the 1990s, after failing to find anything significant, I almost always bought a pair or two of excellent condition Targets for $5 to $10 for souvenirs. Unfortunately I seldom looked at the Magnas and was not aware that N frame PC Magnas were uncommon.

I gave away most of my old Gun Digests so I can't readily look this up, but I would bet Target Stocks were a factory option.

Yeah, I never thought they were hard to obtain until I recently saw comments to that effect on this forum.
Over the last couple of years or so I bought some off the Classifieds just because I thought they + a Tyler might be a good idea on an M28 that gets holster carried.
That just goes to show with S&W products: buy anything for any reason. Someday it will be scarce and expensive.

Birmingham, Alabama PD used heavy barrel M10s and then later on, Beretta 92s. However, at one time, officers had the option of carrying .41 Magnums, so long as they used the lead bullet police round.
I once owned a factory nickel M58 that had belonged to a Birmingham police sergeant. Unfortunately, that one left the stable years ago.

Not much help establishing value for OP’s 58, but it would take a 4 digit number to buy mine. Not so much for what it is but for how well it shoots.
ETA:
Gun left factory in April 1968 and purchased by OHP trooper in 1969-70 time frame. Typical LE gun in shot a little, carried a lot. I acquired in trade from the trooper.

A local shop had a nice condition M58 when I stopped by last week... $899, Pachmayrs, no box, and no original stocks.
Even though .41s aren't really my thing (though 4" N frames are), I'm tempted, but don't really want to pay that much considering the difficulty/cost in sourcing original stocks.

Sounds like it is worth the asking price so someone will buy it. If the serial number has an S Prefix, I think I would. Too bad for me it's way over there in AZ.

I may have to stop by again and see if I can pull the grips... an S prefix would probably push me over the edge.
I really hope it's gone to a good home already, though... I've already exceeded my gun budget for the month.

Two years ago my nickel 58 from 1965 closed on Gunbroker at $850. Finish was 99% but non original diamond Magnas.

My problem is that I have a perfect set of model 58 diamond stocks and no gun to wear them. #@%# I'm still torqued over that whole incident.

It seems just about all the N frame PC magnas that I see on the forum are walnut. I have a pair that's made of Goncalo Alves that I bought here in the classifieds a few years ago because a friend and member told me they are not seen often.
Anyone else have a pair?
