Neighbor has.....
Neighbor came over with an S&W 27-2, nickle plated 81/2" bbl, TT, TH,TS in perfect shape, no box tho. He said he's had it since 1974. Has been fired 6 times. wonders if I would buy it for $1000. I wonder that too? What do you think

Seems to be fair market for a 8.375" 27-2 in perfect shape...perhaps low side of fair vs Gbroker where you then pay shipping and FFL fee. IF you are seriously interested, I would recommend purchasing it.

It is definitely worth the price. If you are reasonably in the market and have the loot available I would jump on that like a rat on a Cheeto.

That is a fair price for a peer to peer transaction. He is benefiting by not having to pay commissions, shipping, etc. So are you. Win win.
I can not predict the future but my guess is you would never lose money on that if you decide to sell it at some later date. In fact, it will probably at least keep up with inflation.

With the 3T’s, it probably was made after 1975 and came in a presentation case. I’m going to be the lone dissenter here and say $1000 is high for just the gun. If it was in the case with all, I’d consider it for $1000 as a mate to my 8-3/8” blued 27-2.
A case will run you about $200. If I were in you position and wanted it, I’d explain the value of the missing case and offer $800. I think that’s fair value.

Not to quibble but what had me was "in perfect shape". Add that to not having to monkey around with FFL fees and the like, it seems very fair. Not to mention the OP has seen it first hand.

$1000, a bit high with no box. But, Im not frothing at the mouth for a long barrel, nic., mod.-27. The long barrel N and K frames never really grabbed me. Now, Im a softie for nic. guns. If it grabs you, buy it. Life is to short.

I paid roughly $900 (part of a trade) for this 99% one (no box/papers) about four years ago. I'd say $1000 for one in nickel in the same condition wouldn't be unreasonable, where I shop anyway. Good luck.

... and don't forget the same person has owned it since 1974 (probably the original owner) and states it has been fired 6 times. Unless you don't believe the guy, that sounds pretty near "like new" to me.

8 1/2" and Nickel.....
I'd pass, too much pimp for me.
Maybe $500.00 because it's going to cost you money to have it bead blasted.
Remember too 8 1/2" guns are a niche market.
Those who like them.... Love them
Those who don't.... hate them

I used to always worry about getting a good deal, not overpaying, etc. I’ve come to the conclusion that in some cases, if the price isn’t ridiculous, just pay the guy’s price. If he’s your neighbor, if he’s a good guy, oftentimes the good will is worth more than trying to beat the guy up on price. Personally, I might ask if that’s his best price and if it is, pay him.

A nickel gun doesn't turn my crank, but I like spending someone else's money. Go for it, sounds like you need justification, so go for it cause we said so.

When was the last time you saw one like it in that kind of condition?
How long do you think it will be before you see another?
$1000 doesn't sound out of line. If you have the spare cash, buy it. I guarantee you can always get your money back out of it if you don't like it.

I sold a long tube nickel 57 last year, gun only on GB for $1200 and it had a set of Pach's on it. Don't think $1k is a bad price.

It’s a reasonable deal if it’s something you’re interested in. If the guy just wants to sell the gun with minimal hassle you should be able to knock $100 or $200 off the price. He’d probably get a lower offer than that at any shop.

Perfect Nickel S&Ws from the 70s really are stunning. Pimpy or not..they are a sight to behold..especially long barrel N frames.

I bought a 95% blued one about 3 years ago for 900. 1K is a very fair if not a good deal, if you want one. I wanted one to round out the barrel lengths, but didn't want to pay a premium price. Around the same time I bought a 6 inch nickel with a pres case and some tools for 900. Had the case redone by a forum member and really like it. Shoots great too. Go figure. I am not really into dickering over a hundred bucks anymore as others have stated.

I think the price is a bit stiff. Not bad though. I would only pay that if I was enthusiastic about the nickel and long tube.
I would not bet you could get your money back out if it were you to decide to sell within a year or two.

Interesting point. OP: If the neighbor is in fact the original owner, you might ask what happened to the presentation case. It may just jar his memory into producing it.

Box?
Yours has the 3 T's so this wouldn't be the original box - wouldn't that be something if it was! Is the SN N231499 in the right neighborhood?

You folks are causing me to rethink a long barreled nickel model 57 that keeps haunting me, but that I have been able to resist.......presentation case and all.

We may never know
OP has 2 posts in 9 years, so a quiet type guy for sure. We may never know if the deal went down or not.
Nickel guns are not usually my game either, especially safe queen candidates, but I did come into a "complete package" (meaning REALLY complete...including blue box, docs, wooden case, tools, and outer cardboard shipping container that all came in originally). Looks unfired, said to have been unfired except factory 3 rounds. It is a 1980 specimen I believe, but haven't Lettered.
Anyway, this gun and package is "next up" for sale (probably on this Forum) whenever I see another S&W that I would like to add to the collection.

I used to be a pawnbroker. I got so sick and tired of people haggling over every last nickel. I was not that kind of pawnbroker who added 30 percent to the price of everything just to have room to move. I priced stuff to move. Despite that, everybody has to try to bust the price. It got really old. I swear you could price dollar bills for 80 cents and some folks would still complain about the price.
As for the OP, if you actually want the gun, the price isn't far off the mark. If you don't want the gun, then don't buy it. Let me ask it this way, if you don't buy the neighbors gun, are you going to look for another one like it to buy cheaper? If not, I think you have your answer.

Interesting thread. While I always try to get a deal or make it a better deal, as life goes on things change. We (wife and I) always bought what we could afford and not what we wanted. Now we are at the point where we buy what we want.At 67 things could change in a heartbeat.I have always been weak for nickel N frame S&Ws.If you want it get it, if you don`t someone else will.

I'll take it
If you don't want it I'm ready to spend the cash. Then I'll have a match set; one blue and one nickel.
