New Edition : M27-2 4" My First One
Last night I added a new edition to the collection. A Model 27-2 in 4".
Been wanting one of these ever since I watched a documentary about Gen. Patton back in the 80's.
The elderly gentleman I purchased it from had a M27 & M28 we were negotiating for but he was physically attacked by his neighbor of 7 yrs because of his American Flag the day before I could drive out to meet him and he decided he needed to keep one of them. I really wanted the 27 because it was one of the N Frames I still didn't own. Now I'm one more N Frame Model closer to completion.
Serial # of N7xxxxx places right at 1980 however it doesn't have the red ramp front sight or the white outline rear sight which should make it more towards the 1979 side of production. Feel free to correct me if I'm interpreting the 4th Gen S&W Bible wrong.
I want to send it in to S&W to get the gun tuned, stripped and re-blued. This one should get the high luster bluing as opposed to the M28 I sent in. But since I'm hearing all of the horror stories on these boards about guns coming back being blotchy and/or otherwise subpar...and I still don't have my M28 back after 3 months....I'm nervous.

Congrats on a great find. If you want it to look like the original blue consider sending it to Ford's. The S&W blue jobs are still being done and are being done with great quality but it's black now...not blue.

Congratulations! I have been looking for a 27 for 11 years or so. Could not find the right 1/price. Have a 6" 28 no dash from 1960. Still would like a 4" 27, or 28. Enjoy your 27! Bob

From the one picture I am not seeing enough wear to justify thinking about a refinish. Looks like it needs a good cleaning, maybe a little Flitz or equivalent, and some Renaissance wax (stocks too). Bet you won't believe the difference. I sure would have to think hard about spending $300-$400 on what looks like a $1000 dollar gun to make it worth $700; nice 4 inch 27-2s are not all that easy to find. Your gun though, enjoy.

I do not understand buying a gun planning to have it refinished. If you wanted a shiny and new looking gun it would be much better to buy one. Add cost of the gun + cost of refinishing and shipping (which is a lot these days) and I bet it totals more than what the refinished gun will be worth and you have a refinished gun never worth what an original would be.

Your 27 has character leave it
The way it is and use it .
If you spend a ton of money
On it will still be worth the
the same . And you will not
Shoot it , you will worry about
Putting a mark on it.

I wouldn't send that gun back to the factory for any reason!!! They no longer use the same bluing process and it seems to not be nearly so durable as that one. They no longer make or have in stock the old forged parts for the internals, except the hand is probably the same.
Clean it, shoot it and love it! They don't make them like that any more.

Probably because 27-2 four incher’s are hard to find. Not everyone is into the whole auction thing. He found one and wants it to be rebuilt and refinised.Few years back a friend of mine on my advise bought a rusted 29-5 four inch that needs a complete rebuild and refinish.Sent the gun to the factory as he got it with no stocks. $389 dollars it returned in perfect condition with complimentary stocks on it.He’s happy and another fri end of our is hounding him to sell for $100 over what he has invested.

That's a beautiful model 27, don't refinish it, sell it to someone who will appreciate it.
Best regards,

Nice, shooter grade Model 27-2. I would not refinish it. It has value for what it is and although a re-blue will make it look nicer, it's value will not be increased and may even be decreased. I'd keep it as-is and take good care of it.

Just saw the photo. A refinish on that gun would be insane.

Great looking revolver. I like the dark stocks. Do as you wish about refinish but a nice shooter like you have there is desirable.

Nice 27.
Same boat....I would clean it hit with some
Flitz.
Picked up this 27-2 just before the COVID mess.
Recessed cylinder's but not pinned.
It was wearing the P/stocks.
Have not been able to shoot it yet.

I sent 2 model 19's for refinishing and action job in late January. One they said the chambers had been expanded and to only shot 38s. I sent them a brand new cylinder and they said it was the same way. I told them to use the original cylinder. They charged my credit card May 12th and on June 1st they requested a current FFL which I sent. June 15th I was told one gun was still in repair. Still nothing. I have sent guns before with good results, but never again.

That's depressing. Also weird that they required an FFL to get involved.
Something is definitely wrong and in need of managerial intervention at the Mother Ship.

I agree. They sent call tag and shouldn't need FFL. But I have one.
