Default How rare is a S&W 28-2 3 1/2 inch barrel .357?

Bumping around at a pawn shop. Found one sitting there. Yes 3 1/2 barrel but it's a 28-2, not a 27. Now it has some blue missing here and there from holster wear but functionally it's in very good condition.

Serial # S244xxx.

Thanks!

Highly unlikely. Did you measure from the end of the cylinder to the end of the barrel? Maybe a cut six inch, how's the placement of the caliber and "Highway Patrolman" stamp? Pictures?

Come to think of it, it may be a 4 inch! But it is a 28 barrel, not a 27. I'll have to take my tape measure with me next time!

4" would not be particularly rare... depending on vintage and condition of course. Though around here (AZ) 6" guns seem to be more plentiful.

Also remember, it could measure a tad short of 4 inches due to fitting during production. Could be 3 7/8", or so. Still considered a nominal 4 inch barrel.

You know, the 4" HP is my favorite N frame, by far. I've owned several over the years and gave one to each of two of my sons when they were old enough to appreciate them. Back in the day, the 4"ers were found everywhere guns were sold. And the 6" examples did not seem to be so plentiful.

Now, I see the 6" HPs all the time and only rarely come across one for sale with the 4" barrel. My safe now contains more 6"ers than 4" units. Life is weird.

Here's pic of my favorite 4" HP, with a target from a few years ago.

Same gun, same shooting session. 15 yds off hand.

Has been said, M28's were not available from the factory with a 3 1\2" barrel.

Top is my M28-2 with a 4" barrel, bottom is my M27-2 with a 3 1/2" barrel

Ok. They are asking $650. I bet I can get it for that with no tax. Is that a good price? Have they gone up any (last one I had 10 years ago $500 was about right.)

Thanks.

I paid 600 for a mint in box -2 6" model a couple weeks back. The gun may have not been priced right, as the other models they had were all 1000 dollar guns. I chalked it up to it being 6", while all other others were 4".

Yes, call them as soon as they open and tell them you are on your way to buy it! I have a 6" that I really, really like, but I prefer a 4" myself. I'm still kicking myself for passing on a nice 4" about a year & a half ago, because I thought the $699 price was at least $100 high. Now it's at least $100 low for one in that condition.

I don't think they will get any cheaper than that. The 4" is a dandy size in my opinion. Attach some photos when you get it home, if it's still there.

It is about right these days if the gun is in very good condition. You should have not problem getting your money back if you decided to sell it. They keep climbing in price but after you shoot it i don't think you will want to sell it. I am a big fan of the heavy N frame for shooting 357 or 38 special.

These days, a 4 inch barreled (the most common barrel length) Model 28 in good condition is going to fetch $600 very easily, most will sell for $700 if not more. People want handguns and will even buy old revolvers. It is currently a seller's market.

A former partner of mine at the police department had a M28 that had a 3 3/4" barrel. S&W would trim the barrel if needed.

Yes, they are. That is Goncalo Alves, which is more highly figured than walnut. That pair are striking in the grain. All GA has nice grain, but those are more colorful than many of them.

Default 4” or 6”

4” guns bring a little more but the 6” is better
hunting gun.

Thanks! Those target stocks were on my 3 1/2” M27-2 when I bought it off of an auction on GB about a year and a half ago, they really drew me to it. That M27 is about a 1968-69 gun so I think that those stocks are very fitting for that gun.

I always thought that was odd. I mean I get that a shorter barrel would be more convenient for carry, but longer 5 to 6" guns just balance so well.
