model 27 5", was my thoughts correct?
My very first handgun was a 27. I thought I remembered reading somewhere Elmer Keith or someone writing that the longer barrel was preferred for MAGNUM guns. I thought the 5" would still be OK in a belt holster, unlike an even longer tube length, so that's what I did. I know that I am getting old. I cannot now find anything in writing to backup my original decision. Did I make the right choice based on what I thought was true? I think I paid $160 back in 75.

If it is going in a holster on the hip, a N-frame w/ a six inch or less barrel is about right. Cannot imagine a good way to carry a 8 3/8 or longer barrel in a belt holster. FWIW, a Model 27 w/ a five inch barrel is special!!! JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

In "Sixguns", (which I no longer own to give you a page number,) Keith says the 5" would be suitable as a holster gun for taller individuals.

To me, I think the 5" barrel is the best balance and the best overall appearance of all the Mod. 27's. I think you made a great choice!

I believe the 5" barrel is the perfect size on a N-frame revolver. It just looks and balances so perfect.

Wasn't it Skeeter Skelton that was the proponent of the 5" N Frame magnums being the perfect combination for a belt holster carry? I could have that wrong.

I guess what I meant to ask; was my CRITERIA for choosing a longer barrel regarding MAGNUM ammunition correct? What I think I remember; it was touted that a magnum needed a longer tube to get the benefit of a bit more burn time to get the extra velocity?

i would not like to carry an 8 3/8 barrel on my hip,although through the years I`ve seen lots of them with plenty of holster wear

Skeeter Skelton wrote an article in which he said if he could only have one gun, it would be a 5 inch Model 27. Long enough to hunt with, short enough to holster carry with lots of different power options from 38 Wadcutter through full power magnums. Shooting Times April 1969.

If I had to have only one Model 27, a 5" is a good way to go
It was a 5" Model 27 in blue that the Factory chose as the 50th Anniversary model back in 1985.
Thankfully, neither I or the rest of you are restricted to owning only one Model 27
The first NEW revolver I ever bought was a 6" Model 27 back in 1978. I still own it to this day and it will be one of the firearms that is sold after my passing

After reading Skeeter extol the virtues of a 5" Model 27. I decided that I should have one someday. Then, sometime in the late 1980's gun writer and photographer Stan Trzoniec wrote an article for Guns magazine with his 5" Model 27 with a McGivern Gold Bead front sight on the cover. Mr. Trzoniec is an excellent photographer and I am sure that many of you have seen his work in various gun magazines. Those photos really did it for me. I bought this one in 1991, it came in the presentation case. It has a Patridge front sight, but alas no McGivern bead. The 5 inch barrel seems just right.

To carry the long tubes you just have to have the right holster.

While not a mainstream choice, I can attest that, thanks to the pictured Barranti Summer Classic holster, even IWB carry can be done with a five-inch M-27.

Once in a while, Skeeter was wrong, but not this time. The 5-inch Model 27 is "just right" on a number of counts. This one is mine.

For me the 3.5 - 5 inch N frame .357s provide the best balance for duty carry, and I think they look the coolest.
5” 27-2 nickel FHP
3.5” 27-2
4” 28-2

I got my first 27 in 1974. I think I paid around the same price. The 5" is awesome.

I think you are correct. A 5" gu is about tthe limit for comfortable holster carry, especially if your getting in and out of a vehicle. I have some 6 and 6 1/2 inch guns and they are great, but don't go anywhere but tithe range much anymore.
Longer than that is just a pain. I have a 8 3/8 500 and it is asx handy as my carbines. . My XP 100s and Contender the same.

Does a longer barrel give you more velocity? Yes. Is it needed to get reach the full velocity potential of the cartridge? Sure. Is the old idea that a .357 out of a short barrel is no faster than a +P .38 a true fact? Absolutely not. A Magnum will always run faster than standard-pressure or +P ammo, regardless of barrel length. And even a Magnum gains no more than 20-40 FPS per added inch of barrel, so the difference between a 4" and a 5" is pretty much negligible.
So, is the old saw true? Yes -- and, no.

I think that Patrol Inspector Jim Speaks deserves some of the credit. For those Skeeter fans that don't recognize the name, he was the guy that sold Skeeter his first 5"- that was originally a 3 1/2"!

I've shot this one a lot, it's my companion most of the time. My truck has a special place in it. After all this time it, (build date 1969 "S") with it's bumps and Bruises is still functions as it should. I think the 5" 27-2 shoots much better than my 6" 28-2
