Was looking for a reasonable 4 inch .38 for my Granddaughter to keep in her nightstand. She feels comfortable with a 4 inch revolver and can shoot the .38 Special pretty decently.

The LGS has a Model 64 with a 4 inch barrel. I can get it for $300, which with the prices today does not seem to bad.

Pro's and Con's comments are welcome.

Cant think of any cons, especially at that price.

The 64 is the stainless version of the Model 10 M&P. Good choice for a home defense gun. The price is excellent, assuming the unit is in good condition. We have two of them (a 2" and a 4") and they function flawlessly.

My friend at my favorite local gun shop would often get in batches of 4” model 10’s, 64’s or eve Taurus model 82’s. He was fond of saying they were all anyone needed for an all around shooter and self defense gun. (Everything you buy after that is a ‘want’.)

I love my 4” M64! Super basic and great balance with the 4” barrel. Enjoy!

The first Revolver I purchased with my own money was a NY1 (DAO) 2" RB model 64, that was around 20 years ago and I paid $125. IMHO $300 for a 4inch is a good price, contingent on the condition of the revolver. I'd also be interested in the - version of the gun, as there was several design changes over the years.

The DAO pull is smooth (expected given the age and use) and the revolver is mechanically reliable. So, I would expect yours to be good or tunable to good. Unfortunately, I did not keep records on it so I can't give you ammo recomendations or data. I can recall that it functioned fine with +P ammo to include 158gr Nyclad +p and 130 grain Winchester White box . I don't recall which load the fixed sights were regulated for, but If I had to guess I'd say 158.

The gun came with both the stock wood grips and a pair of Pachmayr Compac Professions. The Pachmayrs where much batter than the stock grips. YMMV. I wish the gun had a high vis front sight, but it's not a show stopper. A little paint on the front sight and way you go.

I'd prefer the 67 with adjustable sights and high vis front sight, but you aren't going to find one at that price.

$300 for a Model 64 is an excellent deal. I was just creating a spreadsheet of all of my current guns with date purchased and price. I bought a 4” Model 67-1 in excellent condition on gunbroker 4 years ago with a Buy it Now price of $200. Auction was less than 10 minutes old when I stumbled onto it. Needless to say, I hit But it Now fast! $25 to ship and $25 for my FFL and the gun was in my hand for $250.

I carried an NYPD NY-1 Model 64 DAO. Most guys ditched the wood Magna stocks immediately and the Pachmayr’s were the only ones authorized since they had the little window on the bottom of the grip so the serial number could be read at qualification. The Nyclad 158 grain +P was the duty round for by the 4” and 2” off duty guns. I believe the 135 grain was eventually chosen for the off duty guns but I don’t remember. The 130 grain WWB ammo was definitely never an issued round. That Walmart plinking ammo.

I still have several boxes of the Nyclad ammo. We used FMJ ammo until the Amadou Diallo shooting in 1997. The FMJ performed so poorly that hollow point ammo was finally authorized. Housing and Transit Pad already had hollow points since they worked in a “concrete rich environment”. As if the rest of NYC wasn’t full of concrete and steel!

I should probably shoot those Nyclads. They’re 20 years old at this point but just can’t bring myself too. They don’t make them anymore and once they’re gone, they’re gone.

My nightstand gun is a 3inch BBL Model 64-3 with magnas and tyler T grip adapter. 158 grn 38+P semi jacketed Hollowpoint. Shoots like a lazer! Round butt!

I just took ownership of 3 inch 65 (.357) can’t wait to take it to the range. I was looking for a 4 inch 64 and the 65 fell into my lap

One of two revolvers I would like to have is what dcopper just posted, a 3inch M64. The other is a 2inch M64. I have two 4 inch, heavy and pencil barrel M64's, my favorite to shoot and carry when not concealed.

Thanks for the history on those Pachmayrs, I didn't realize that they where the only authorized aftermarket. I was never on the Job and I never looked at the patrol guide. All I knew was that they came on the gun and where really comfortable.

I believe NYPD went to the Speer Gold Dot 135 +Ps as their service round before dropping revolvers. There might have been a different round between the Nyclads and the 135 gold dots.

I have two of them in 3" and they were mine and my wife's bed table guns for a long time. Excellent weapon and that is a very decent price.

My 2" round-butt Model 64 is one of my "must have" handguns. After many years of carrying a full-size 1911 .45 daily I underwent several surgeries to the shoulder, elbow, and wrist which have made it difficult for me to confidently handle the semi-autos. Fortunately the Model 64 is still handy and fills my daily needs very well.

$300 is an excellent price in today's market, assuming good and serviceable condition. Time to jump on that one!

I do recall them going to the 135 grain Speer, but I find it hard to believe they issued those for the 4” guns. Fixed sighted K frames shoot point of aim with 158 grain ammo. Although by the time they switched to the 135 grain, there were very few 4” revolvers in service so maybe they didn’t really care. Duty revolvers were no longer authorized on 8/31/2017, but off duty revolvers are still grandfathered. The job stopped authorizing off duty revolvers in 1995, so there are definitely guys who still have them, which means stocking ammo for them and running qual cycles. Just for the principle, I would be the last person to give up my off duty .38. I’d laugh as I stood alone on the firing line to qualify with it.

The last cop carrying a service revolver would have been hired in 1992. The youngest guy still carrying it would have had 25 years on the job. There were less than 150 left when they forced those left to give them up. They would have all been gone on their own in a few years, and I would bet that 95% of those who still had them weren’t patrol guys. Mainly bosses and detectives or guys in details and off the street. For whatever reason, they refused a free 9MM and three days off patrol to get certified. That should have been respected. They still had to have ammo for the off duty guns and run qual cycles for them so what was the real problem?

By the way, going rate for a used DAO revolver was $100, and that included the duty holster, speedloader case, speedloaders, and belt. The 9MM was free but you had to pay $80 for the night sights and you had to buy the belt, holster, and mag pouch. The rig was probably $200 or so so guys had to fork over around $300 so selling the revolver was common. Funny thing is the only buyers were new guys who never had the .38 who wanted to feel like “hair bags”. When I sold mine the rookie cop I sold it to immediately put it on and went to check himself out in the mirror. Model 10’s went for slightly higher because they had hammers.

For your needs the model 64 is just about perfect , it is rated for +P ammo if you need it and I paid $250 for my used model 64 about 30 years ago .
The Price is definitely Right ...if it's in decent mechanical shape I would tell you to jump on that deal with both feet !

My first revolver is a ca-1993 factory DAO model 64, with a 4” heavy barrel. It came to me as a bag of parts and I got the distinct pleasure of putting it all back together and tuning it using Mr. Kuhnhausen’s book as reference. It is buttery smooth and very accurate. A sweetheart to shoot. Please get one; you won’t be disappointed!
