I don't know whether the young folks at S&W would have that info.

Your Chiefs Special came from the "roving J" serial number era -- 1970 through the mid '70s. It began at 1J1 and went through 999J99, with up to four digits after the J and no more than three before it.

I don't have access to my complete database today, but I'd guess your friend's shipped in late 1971 or early 1972. My 87J974 shipped in March 1972.
