Default Frank-un-shteen? What’s going on here with this 28?

Well, don’t drink and shop online.

.

What I thought was case coloring turned out to be just shiny! I doubt S&W made a 28-2 in “mini-pinto” configuration, so I hope she shoots well.

What the H-E-double-hockey sticks is going on here?

As-received:

I’ll post up a few cleaner pics shortly.

Looks like the case colors were buffed off the hammer and trigger. Not likely the target hammer and trigger are original to the Model 28.

I've been seeing the case coloring buffed off of triggers and hammers more and more lately.

I've got a theory that the youngsters think they are inheriting slightly dirty guns from the oldheads and are buffing the "stains" off the hammer and trigger in an attempt to clean them up before selling.

I can’t tell if they’re polished, nickel, or cast kryptonite. Any guesses welcome.

More pics, please ignore un-refinished stocks. Next project.

Yeah I’d prefer to see case color as well, but that’s a pretty nice piece with target everything (not original to a 28, but who cares for a shooter, I wouldn’t) and presentation stocks to boot. I don’t know what the blue gunk is in the action. Might want to detail strip that and let it soak, or maybe give it a couple hours in a sonic cleaner if you can. I bought a 19-3 once that was literally packed with moly grease....Amazing what some people do....

The top and bottom of the frame on your gun is not standard either. Looks like it was bead blasted and blued. I checked some of mine. None are like that.

Has the whole frame been bead blasted? It looks like the sides are normal, but the rest looks extremely matte.

Definitely looks refinished/re-blued. It's been buffed with the sideplate removed. (and dry fired with the plate off)

I promise it wasn’t me ! Who knows what this nice middle-aged lass had been through before landing in my lap? I promise to treat her well.

I removed the gunk, funk, crud, and all-around filth and I hope to get her to the range soon with a report.

Looks to be just the edges of the frame.

It came with some decent non-diamond Magnas. I threw the rough presentation grips on, as I can’t do Magnas without the companion Tyler’s T ! Would those be the size 4 for n-frame?

It took about an hour of gentle coaxing to get the insides back to snuff. A very light dash of internal lubrication, and we are [hopefully] good to go !

The forcing cone and top strap say this Model 28 has been shot a whole lot with magnum loads. Fair amount of erosion going on there. I'd say it was used to the point the finish was worn, so it went to a gunsmith who took it apart, fixed it, polished the internals, then reblued it. As long as everything is in spec and safe, it's a shooter, but not a collector's piece.

How can you tell that it has been dry fired with the side plate off?

Does it leave a mark on something or what??

You should see the one I picked up cheap. It has some kind of silver coating on the cylinder. But, I got it do do a conversion with anyway.

Is it possible someone replaced the original trigger and hammer with a stainless target hammer and trigger?

Some like the polished look and some think it smooths the action. Easy fix.

There weren't any actual stainless N frame hammers or triggers. Formerly case hardened non stainless hammers and triggers were given a super thin chrome plating. The flash chrome plating is a different color.

My guess is that the hammer and trigger had rust that could not be removed without also removing the case coloring so they went ahead and polished the whole surface.

We all should have a shooter grade 28 or two. It'll probably still group as tight as the prettiest 27.

Let's hope whoever polished the trigger and hammer didn't cut through the case hardening layer. Often when trigger jobs are done by someone a little heavy handed that's what happens and the surfaces will wear more quickly than they would while case hardened.
Most of the time when you see a polished hammer & trigger they have been jeweled.

One of the dangers in dry firing with the sideplate off is that the hammer can work it's way up the stem (or hammer stud) and strike the frame when it falls. As a result, the mating surfaces at this juncture between the frame and sideplate are no longer "perfect". Sometimes, this can be a pretty glaring artifact.

My first thought when I saw the closeups was the sideplate gap looked too big to be factory original. I am going to have to disagree with you on the reblue. Should be a darn good shooter though.

Exact same finish as mine. Mine shipped in 1974. Purchased brand new and has 6 rds through it.

Do you have M28's with polished frame edges (trigger guard, top strap, around the hammer, etc.? Are they the older models, like a -2 or earlier? Everything I've read about the M28 says the sides are smooth, but not polished to the degree the M27 is, and the edges are a fine beaded matte finish.

My M28-2 has the bead-blasted matte finish everywhere except on the sides, barrel and cylinder, which is a dull polish and not a finely polished finish like the M27. The top of the top strap and sight ramp is also the beaded finish.

Mine also has a "semi-target " hammer and smooth faced "semi-target" trigger, meaning they are wider than standard, but not as wide as the ones shown in the OP's pictures. Mine are case-colored, and the dealer I bought it from is a S&W armorer and says the side plate on mine has never been removed so far as he can tell.

OP's revolver looks great, and the non-case-color trigger and hammer nothwithstanding, looks original finish to me.

If you can't see that this is a reblue, after looking at this picture, you might need your eyes checked.

Look at the side plate gap. It has either been replaced or, if original, the frame edges have been rounded over. I say it is a reblue.
