New Addition: 27-2 3-1/2" Barrel
Spending WAY too much time on the "List" these days. While glossing over the 10,000 or so plastic Wonder-Nines...I found me another N-Frame looking for a new home.
A Model 27-2 made in 1973. It's got a 3-1/2" Barrel and bank vault lock up. But good lord...it looks like a previous owner was using a brillo pad for polishing duty. Every inch of this gun is scuffed or scratched with at least 5 spots where the bluing was worn off completely. I sold a 4006 and a 4013TSW to fund the purchase with a couple of bucks left over for a Taco Bell dinner. Have you had those Grilled Cheese Burrito's yet? Holy Cow that is some good eating right there!
Both 40's were police turn-ins that I didn't have a chance to shoot yet. Not sure if I got hosed on this deal but I like N-Frames more than Semi-Autos so I'm feeling fairly good about it.
However I have a problem.
I now have 2 27-2's.
One is a 4" that has cylinder slop that to me is not acceptable. Which means sending it to S&W and waiting until 2029 for it to come back......and I have a 3-1/2" that is worth more if it didn't look like someone spent their days skidding it across the pavement all "Movie Style". So again...that means sending it back to S&W and hoping I don't die of old age before it comes back to me.
What to do....

Looks like a good “working” weapon, lots of character.

Shows some character, I'd probably just keep it as it is. Nice to have one you can carry and shoot and not worry about holster wear. I've never been happy with refinished guns except those done by the factory and I'm not sure the current factory refinishes would satisfy either. Enjoy.

I bought this one about nine years ago. It was an old police gun. It had a lot of finish wear, but no scratches or imperfections other than being carried a lot. It is bank vault tight. I got it for $550 and decided to send it back for a re-blue. Heresy I know, but I was young.
S&W contacted me and said that they would only strip it and re-blue, that no polishing was necessary. It's darker than the original blue, but its so pretty that I've never fired it.
It came with a set of Herrett target grips which I replaced with faux ivory magnas.
These are the original seller's photos to show condition.

WCCPHD,
Very nice 27. That's eventually the direction I'm gonna go with the 3-1/2".
The 4" I'll get back to proper operation and make that the knock around carry.
I think Patton's 27 was a 4" which was why I got it...to make a clone of his but now that I see what a 3-1/2" looks like all pimped out...I think you swayed me.

Patton's Registered Magnum had a 3.5" barrel, just like your new (to you) piece. I believe he ordered it in 1935 while stationed here in Hawaii.

Only thing to remember is that the new "blue" is more black than original. And S&W collectors want an unmolested gun, which only matters if you plan to sell it later.
My biggest mistake in having it refinished is that its "too pretty" to shoot now.

By chance, are you a politician or plastic surgeon?
OP, I think you’ve discovered 3.5” 27s tend to be more habit forming than other Smiths variants. I, too, have been bitten.

I bought a pre 27 3 1/2 some years ago, just because I didn't have one to shoot! It spent a lot of time in a holster as the front sight was a little rounded and it had blue wear and it looks like somebody scratched rust or something off of the sideplate!! But, its great fun to shoot!! I have thought about a hard chrome finish, but I can't bring myself to mess with it.

I don't think I'd send a 27-2 back to S&W, there should be dozens of competent gunsmiths that can take that slop out for you.

Suggest getting one or both serviced by a competent gunsmith then shoot and enjoy them. Nelson Ford in Phoenix works on my S&W's - mostly for triggers and timing and refreshing my older pre-1950 guns. Here's a 27-2, N prefix about 1975, that came my way last December wearing presentation stocks and a seasoned Bianchi #5BHL. It shows honest holster wear, but it's tight with a smooth trigger and spot-on timing.

If the 27 is mechanically sound, there is nothing wrong with having a less than perfect looking "shooter"
I have guns that don't go to the range often because they may get a scratch on them. You have nothing to worry about. Enjoy it! Bob

It's your gun to do with as you please, but I agree with the above posts.
If it were mine I would leave it as is and enjoy shooting and carrying it without worry of marring the finish.

Your gun is a great shooter. These are meant to be carried, so with scratches, no worries
