Default New guy trying to ID revolver

Hello, I just joined this community and I'm already asking for help. I have an old revolver that I would like to know about, here is the info I have: it's a 5 shot, steel, black,1&3/8"barrel, 3screwgun. It has"Air weight .38 spl CTG" on right side of barrel. On the ejector yoke it says ",Model 38", and has the S&W logo on the front under the cylinder release, "Smith & Wesson on left side of barrel. The serial number starts, "1J". The only other markings are under the ejector

Welcome!

"Model 38"
Actually, I'm sure it says, MOD 38; same thing. The Model 38 Bodyguard Airweight was the aluminum alloy frame Chiefs Special with a shrouded hammer, introduced in 1955. It became the Model 38 in 1958.

1&3/8"barrel
The length is actually 1 7/8". It is measured all the way to the front of the cylinder, not just to where it enters the frame. This is the nominal 2" barrel.

The serial number starts, "1J"
Depending on the total number of numeric digits, this could date it to either the 1970-73 period (maximum 5 digits) or the year 1983 (six digits). In neither case would I call it "old."

I wouldn't either, but we have a lot of people with inherited or gift guns from the third quarter of the 20th century that are older than they are.

Yes, and I am glad they are with us. It is great to see younger guys showing interest in wheel guns. I'm now in my 70s and wondering if there will still be much of a SWCA in another 50 years. The new guys coming in who are under 35 encourage me to think there will be!

Speaking of which, Mr. Watson, why aren't you in the SWCA???

Default New guy

Thanks for all the responses. I pretty much knew it was a mdl 38 just wondered about age. It was given to me by my shift sergeant in 98. Just started carrying it, put Crimson Trace grips on it. I use Hornady critical defense 110 rounds, had considered +p but have been told not a good idea. Thanks guys

The 70s and early 80s were not very long ago.

Welcome to the S&W forum from Pennsylvania.
Old, middle age, young...... Age is just a number that means different things to different folks. I feel and think I'm 40, but I'm not.
