Likely the most carried S&W by coppers across
this nation in 1970.
50 year old Smith.
Tight and right....just honest holster wear.

Mine is scratched and pitted, especially the back strap, but pristine on the inside. No proof, but I think mine rode in the holster of a LEO.

The 19 was popular but I bet in 1970 most cops carried 38s. There was a lot of controversy over police using the 357 Magnum. Sheriffs and Highway Patrol officers could justify them by saying they needed the extra power to disable fleeing cars and that they often operated in open, rural areas. But urban PDs were told that the 357's over penetration would kill babies in homes. I remember in CA two cities I knew of allowed 45 ACP 1911s and the CHP could carry 357s. All other police I knew about packed 38s.
I recall 1973 when a gunfight erupted next to where I worked. City police, the SO and CHP all got involved. The barricaded subject was a Sheriffs Deputy who had murdered his girlfriend and then killed the first officer who responded at the scene. After a long gun battle he took his own life. It was tragic all around.
I could hear the gunfire as cops fired on the house. Bang...bang...bang as the PD and SO officers fired their 38s and the BOOM as a CHP would turn loose with his 357.

That's what I was issued in 1974. First true DA revolver I ever fired, or disassembled. We shot so many rounds in training that first week, my hands hurt.
Lot's of great memories. Still love the model 19. Mine's wearing a 2.5" barrel now.

I had 3 different 19-3’s in the 70’s. I could only afford one gun at a time as a Police Officer with my first check being about $565/month before withholding. As I recall I traded a 4 inch for a Python, which I traded for a Combat Commander, Which I traded for a blue 2 1/2 inch and then went to a nickel gun. I hadn’t really thought about the fact that I have three 19-3 guns right now until I read this post. One each from 1970, 1973, and 1976.
