Model 19, modified front sight?
I came across a model 19 with a front sight that looks like it was filed or altered, and I am wondering why that might have been done?
The rear sight looks like a standard factory adjustable type.

Perhaps it shot low with the existing rear sight adjusted all the way up? Does the rear sight appear to have the correct height blade?

Sights
The model 19 in this picture was the same way
When I got it. I milled the rest of it off and cut
a slot for a pinned sight. I really like Patridge
sights and this one really shoots.You can put
Any sight you want in the slot.

I don't think I am up to milling and cutting slots, lol. I can replace parts, but that is about all.
I can't tell if the rear sight is correct, or different, but I would think that getting the correct rear blade would have been simpler than modifying the front one. I was wondering if the sight was filed to compensate for a barrel swap or something like that, or some other common modification.
Seems odd because the gun look well taken care of, and not an agency trade.

The original adjustment range anticipated the use of 158 grain bullets, and I expect the previous owner wanted it to zero with 125s without the rear sight cranked up so high it would snag on stuff.

That is a quite possible. The gun has target grips with a thumbrest, so good chance it was set up for wad cutters or other light loads. Does not look like it was anyone's duty gun recently.

May just be me, but that "Ski ramp" rear sight mount looks a LOT higher than Factory?

A .146" tall rear blade would be (was) correct for the gun.

As noted above, probably to zero the revolver, although it could have been dropped and the blade was filed on that angle to clean up damage.

Most owners of Smith & Wesson revolvers are unaware that the sight blades can be changed out for different heights.
That is not common among the different makes of firearms

About 15 years ago my Model 19 was back at S&W getting a tune-up.
I had them put on the Mcgivern gold bead front sight. Why? Simply
because I like it that way.

I go with it was probably dropped and then filed to clean it up. Its kind of a weird angle to file it just to raise POI.

It's amazing what a service revolver goes through at times... or how careless some officers are with their piece. As a rooky, my first issue Model 15 must have been dropped more than once by previous officers. I was embarrassed to carry it so I bought a Model 19 as soon as I could afford one.

Much can be accomplished by switching rear sight blades:
This blade was offered by S&W as a replacement to fit one version of their Model 41 target 22 autoloader. However, it was also perfect for heavy barreled PPC revolvers with their taller front sights. When mounted straight up and down on a revolver, rather than at the 41’s intended rearward slant, they presented a substantially deeper-notch sight picture for more precise sight alignment,
and better results:

Another rear sight blade switch:
This S&W 63-3 had the same problem which faced the previous owner of the OP’s 66. When the HiViz front sight was installed, the gun wouldn’t zero without the rear sight being cranked up way too high.
Fortunately, a much taller two-dot blade meant for the factory adjustable sight on a 5906 fit the J-Frame perfectly. When it was installed with the paintless dots facing forward and the notch deepened and widened by filing, the problem was solved, and with an outstanding sight picture, too.
