Default Model 29-2 Assistance

Recently inherited a pistol and need some assistance.
Details:
Model 29-2
Hand Ejector
S/N#N792XXX
44 Magnum
6" barrel
Adjustable sights
Wooden display box

The gun finish appears to me to be in excellent condition. The only area I see an issue is on the very end of the barrel on one side..small spot I tried to capture in pics.

Not sure what the heck happened to the box; however you can see from the pictures that the inside felt basically disintegrated. If you touch it it just turns to dust. Not sure if it could be recovered or if it's even worth it.

Thanks to the display box felt issue some of it seems to be on the grips. Not sure if I can get it off or if I just need to replace the grips. I haven't tried anything yet. Hopefully captured it well enough in the pics.

Would love to know the value of the gun, when manufactured, whether or not to get the box recovered and how I may possibly remove the felt from the grips or just buy new ones. Anything else you know about this gun would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Nate...

Clean the grips with Ballistol and member jcelect reflocks cases. All that style case turns to dust on inside.

Looks like holster wear on barrel end. Gun approx 1978-9. Value approx. $1000-1200 once cleaned up.

The damage to your grips can be remedied with a strip and refinish. Easy to do if you have the right materials.

The box can be relined. Again, you can do it yourself if you have the know-how and the right materials, but this is best left to someone who has done it a lot. Contact forum member jcelect. He can make your box look like new. Good thing that you have the compartment lid and the tools. Those are often hard to come by.

Very nice gun by the way!

As a caution, it is fine to display your gun in the presentation box for show, but I wouldn't store your gun in it. You've seen what can happen to the grips. You are fortunate you did not have any damage to the blueing.

Beautiful gun and welcome to the forum. I would caution you about setting a pistol down with the hammer cocked like it is in the picture. I would hate to see it fall over and have the hammer fall.

Take care and be careful - as Inspector Callahn said _ The most powerful hangun in the world.

Understand and thank you. I did ensure it was unloaded and I cocked the hammer in the pics to show the hammer appears to be case hardened. I thought that might be important for identification/value.

I think the gun more likely dates to late 1980 to early 1981. A letter of authenticity would give you the exact ship or sales date:

From distant experience, I seem to recall WD-40 and light rubbing takes the blue flocking material off the stocks. And member jcelect is definitely the man to redo the case liners.

Congratulations on a wonderful inheritance. GREAT looking 29-2 and my personal one is very close to yours, albeit nickel, at N754K.

I wholeheartedly agree with saemetric's advice on restoring original finish on the grips with Ballistol. WD40 might do in a pinch, Ballistol would be my choice.

I've attached pics of my presentation case as it looks just like yours. Definitely contact jcelect on the forum to see what he can do for you on replacing the box lining. I did mine myself, BUT with guidance from jcelect. Again, that is a great looking 29-2.

EDIT: The re-do of the presentation box was a re-lining and not a flocking.

Looks beautiful. Got the Ballistol on order. Should get here Tuesday. Thanks for the input.

Great! And if you do need to go beyond a "Ballistol cleaning" you have the option of touch-up where finish may be missing with Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil. Just apply ever so sparingly, rubbing in a "dot" of it with your finger, wipe off excess, and letting it dry 24 hours. If needed, you may repeat. Just go sparingly and keep it off the checkered wood. And if you get too many coats on you can knock down the sheen with some 0000 steel wool.

Default 29-2, 6.5"

Welcome to the fraternity, my possession is the above, I have the serial number and smith letter dated 1973, I picked out a nice set of cokes for it and have the stock grips also, my flocking was flocked also, but I made a replacement in red, top and bottom, I know red is wrong but flock it.
I'm glad you posted the problematic stain on your grips because I would like a small repair done with the tru oil and now I know what to buy. Enjoy your gun they are fun.

Buzz, your gun is a nice specimen for sure. You might want to get the proper fitting screwdriver and tighten the front attachment screw in the rear sight. I looks like someone has been on it before from the pic but you sure don't want to loose that screw.
