Default M-36 no dash Question, and Another

I'm looking at a nickle 3" SB with the dreaded floating J. I used to know a little about these but I need to ask. SN: 329J70. What's the deal with this? Any help would be appreciated.

No particular deal. Just a peculiar serial pattern in 1971/72, with the J floating backward up to 999J99. Since in your serial it is in its final position, it’s likely a 1972 production gun.

Hmmmm. Guess I never realized the roving J series was dreaded. Roys Jinks calls it the "roving J" so that's good enough for me.

I know the SCSW says it ranged from '71 to '72, but it actually started in about June '70 when the previous series reached J99999, and the higher numbers in the range overlapped with the following series through most of '73.

Quite a few limited run Chiefs (e.g., Model 36-1 Chiefs Special Target models with 3" barrels in the 1Jxxxx and 2Jxxxx range) didn't ship till '75 and '76. My own Model 36-1 3" 7J4619 (not a target model) shipped on April 16, 1976.

You might already know this, but here goes. The series had from one to three numbers before the J and from one to four after it. So it began with 1J1, after 1J9999 came 2J1, after 99J999 came 100J1, and so on, through -- as Absalom mentioned -- 999J99.

Hope this helps.

Thank you! The owner is hesitant to sell but if he decides to part with it, I'm his buyer. The only flaw on the gun is a very small nick on the left side of the top strap. Hardly noticeable.

Default Additional Question On This Revolver

A return to a slightly dated post: Any idea to the market value of one of these puppies in EXC?

The ones I've watched through the summer seem to have gone a bit "high" compared to just a year ago. They're have also been some wild swings in the prices on the auction sites (I never see Chiefs for sale locally).

Anywhere from $800 to $1,000 is what I've seen for almost as new in the box. As I recall the ones I've watched began as $00.01 opening bid auctions with no reserve. I don't pay any attention to auctions with a high opening bid or a reserve.

Hope this helps.
