Model 10-5 love 3" style
So in love with 3" revolvers lately. I have a feeling I'm not the only one. Just grabbed a 10-5. Pics for your viewing pleasure and the standard request....date please S# D516199
And yes, that's a dented side plate. Trigger is smooth as silk and not a scratch where that dent is. Weird. Thoughts? Otherwise, gun looks like a safe-queen. Will pop the plate off tomorrow and clean inside with a lighter trigger rebound spring.

Cool gun. Made in 1973 and probably shipped that year.

Very nice 3" Model 10s. I have a 2" and a 4". I think I need to be in the middle too.
My 2" on the left is a 10-5. The 4" on the right is a 10-6.
10-6s were issue to Boise PD in the 1970s. The plain cloths cops got
the 10-5s.
The 4"s favorite holster is the Brill, shown 2nd from left, that
our friend turnerriver generously let me have. Knife from Marbles.
The 5s favorite holster is the RSS (Revolver Super Speed)
by Ken Null. The grips are from Grasshorn. The knife is a
Puma Prince.

Awesome guys! Thanks for the info. That was a great year for me...I was born!

The suede lining is a bonus for sure.
This is my 4th model 10 this year. Two will go to a gunsmith for work. I have a problem I'm pretty sure.

I was issued a 3" Square Butt Model 10 when I first joined the New South Wales Police Force. The State Government of the day had all the old Smiths destroyed when we changed over to the Glock 22/23/27. The matte blue finished Model 10 is as close as I could purchase to my issued revolver.

jjmIII . . . many (if not most) of these 3" M&Ps were made for export . . . Australia being the most frequent destination . . . but your s/n is close enough to mine (D571184) that it could have shipped to Jamaica.
Thanks everyone for sharing your examples . . . I am a big 3" K-frame fan as well!

That looks like it might be a replacement heavy barrel on a 10-5 frame, judging by the juncture of the frame and barrel - still, that's about the only way to get one at a reasonable price these days...

Wouldn't there be import markings then? Hmmm, maybe they were on the barrel.

I believe you are right sir! The barrel has a matte finish top like the newer models. Need to see how this sucker shoots.
Guys, any ideas on the side plate dent? Dented but not even a scratch on the finish. Is that a "trigger job" kinda thing? Tightens something inside? I'm now seeing this gun has been modified a bit. The DA trigger pull feels great!

A little bit off topic but since were talking about 3 inch revolvers, the new Ruger 10 mm GP100 with a 3” barrel is very cool. Might have to get me one of those someday. Then I can shoot a bark & snort 10mm but also a lot of the .40 caliber ammo I have laying around from being a cop.

Did you leave the PD tracking sticker (small dot with bar code) on yours. I took mine off and wish I had kept it.

Learn something new everyday. Never seen a 3" Model 10-5 and didn't know they were made. Now I want one.

3" barrel does just seem to pair well with a K frame...a natural match of size and balance.

That is quite the dent Are you having trigger difficulties? It looks like it could be possible that could interfere with the rebound slide or the trigger. A careful internal inspection could verify. I also agree that it could be a replacement barrel. But, what the heck. If you can get it to shoot, you have a 3" M-10. Somebody else could chime in about *judiciously* flattening the dent from the inside if it is interfering with the works. A replacement side plate might be a whole new can o' red wigglers.

I hammered some of it out. Might commit to trying some more. It doesn't interfere with the trigger function at all. It's actually pretty minor, but the camera sure picks it up.

Very nice pistol. Love the 3" barrels. My Model 10 3" is just outside the dates for this forum or I'd post a picture.

Mod10's are following me home!
Just bought another
S&W model 10-8 38SPL 3" barrel
I swear I bought it on accident...I'll tell my Wife
Bid low and no one else bid. Will still have $525 though to get it in my hands with sellers 3% CC fee, shipping, and FFL. Looks like a RB is under the ugly rubber grip. Finish is rougher on this one than the first. I'll be sure to give you guys a pic upon arrival.

It only has the importer stamping. If there were any police agency markings or stickers on it, they’re long gone.

I agree that the barrel is a replacement, so this might have started out as a 4-inch Model 10-5. The 3-inch barrel makes it easier to carry, yet retains the full length ejector rod. If this one were mine, I'd be looking for a leather holster for it right now.

I’ve got a 3” Round Butt Model 10. For the most part the 3” 10’s And 13’s, were un-cataloged, manufactured, as needed for specific agencies. NYSP and the FBI are examples of two agencies issuing the 3” heavy barreled models.
My 3” HB, RB, 10, is one of two, made in the mid 80’s. The other gun went to my friend. Their manufacture, is a story for another time. The 3” round butts are, IMO, very well balanced revolvers.

Nice find! The 3" K Frames are a fan favorite!
The closest 3" K Frame that I have to a M10 is a 3" M64-3 that was an ex police gun that I bought back in the late 90's when nobody wanted them.

Holsters are a personal thing, but I think the one you pictured would be good for carry as long as it has good retention. For outside the waistband holsters, I like holsters that are either molded to closely fit the firearm, if the molding is not precise, then an adjustable retention system. I find thumb breaks and retention straps to be slower when drawing, they are fine for the woods, but for defensive carry I want something that will not let the firearm fall out, yet provides for an easy draw.

Just got a nice price on a correct 10-8 3"
Pictured with a 3" 36 I grabbed on the same day.
I've got the sickness
The K came with some nasty Uncle Mike's rubbers. Threw on some cheap Dymondwood's I had laying around.

Dropped the gun off at my Gunsmith. Just an action/trigger job. This 3" RB is perfect! Can't wait to get her back.
