Finally got a model 27

I’ve been looking for a nice 27 p&r For about 10 years off and on now. Never found one when I had the funds, Just one of those things I guess. I Sold a few guns recently and Finally decided to just pull the trigger on a model 27 from Gunbroker.

It’s a 27-2 6” 3 T’s. Not perfect condition but really nice. Haven’t fired it yet. Hoping to get to the range this week.

like to aquire A 6 inch 50s to 70s N Frame Target style Smith. Either a 6 inch 27 or a 38/44 Outdoorsman. I VERY much like your nice 27 you have now.

Thanks everyone. The serial number looks like it falls on the early side of 1980-1983. I might do a letter on this one, it has some strange import/proof marks under the crane...

They sure are getting pricey. Yours is very nice, glad you finally found one. My older version with 6 1/2 inch barrel is a joy to shoot so I am sure you will love shooting yours too. Enjoy

Congrats on that very nice find.....they don't come around that often. That one sure looks like you say "1980 ish"

For some comparison I have three:
1. a October 16, 1952 "Pre-27" with 6.5" bbl, Patridge front sight, diamond Magnas for stocks. Letters as shown. Shoots absolutely terrific!

2. a April 5, 1977, 3.5" bbl, ramp front sight, smooth GA target stocks. This gun is a handful to shoot with full load maggies onboard. Accurate but a bit of a punisher for me.

3. a May 8, 1980, 6" bbl, Nickel finish, Patridge front sight, checkered GA target stocks. Don't know how well it shoots as it came with a bunch of collector goodies, supposedly unfired except factory test, so sits in the safe for now.

Yours looks to have the Patridge front sight and I'm no expert but if a 1977 had ramp front sights, and the 1980 back to Patridge then maybe.

According to SCSW 4th, the 27-3 engineering change came about in 1983, and 1980 Target stocks became standard.

Any way you cut it...........you got a good one and please post a range report when you get a chance....these guns are phenomenal as to their build quality and accuracy.

I would just have assumed that S&W put a ramp front sight on M27s with the shorter barrels as these would be more likely to be carried in holsters.

But you know what they say about people who assume.

Congratulations, and good job! I have been looking about 10 years and still don't own 1! My itch was semi satisfied when I picked up a 28, no dash, 6". It has a S, serial # {1960} Currently wearing Ahrend Stocks.
After that I was OK. That is not saying that I wouldn't pick up a 27 at the right price/ condition. Bob

A huge congrats to you on finding a beautiful M27. I remember when I was a teen in the 70's my dad had a friend with a 5" M27 and it was the most amazing deep glossy blue.

Careful Rich, they are addictive. I was like you, finally got one in March of 2019, a 6" blue. Suddenly there was a nickel 8 3/8" in there with it by 2020.

Many models are addicting. For me it is 28's and 15's. Other's M27's, others M14's, some anything in a K frame. Point being, addiction is not limited to one model, but you picked one that is especially addicting. You have pre models, blued, nickeled, barrel lengths and other options to get hooked on. Enjoy the trip

It was on there when I got the gun. I'm guessing that its a poor man's target trigger.

Most folks here hate it. I like it.

I added a white outline rear sight blade and the Coke Bottle Stocks.

Thanks for the explanation, never seen that on a S&W trigger, that's pretty cool. Hey, that's what makes yours unique! Someday hope to add a 27 or 28 to my collection but at these current prices...ouch...might take awhile.

I've never been able to afford an older 27 but I love to shoot my 28 purchased long ago.
