Default Info please on 27-2 Target grips

Two questions on 27-2 Target grips from mid to late 70's

1) If original to gun, what would a letter typically say about target grips

2) What wood is this

Gonzalo Alves Target Grips.
Funny, Smith and Wesson parts diagram called them stocks and some "purists" get offended when called grips, but all of the letters I have from SMHF call them grips

In that era, adjustable sight N frames had the 3Ts (Target hammer, trigger and stocks) along with the wood Presentation case, so I vote original.

I'm not a purist by any means. I call them target stocks and magna grips. But that's just me.

Very nice 27-2 with beautiful Goncalo Alves Target Stocks.

All the letters I've receive from Mr Jinks they are referred to as target grips too.

In September 1975, the Model 27 was upgraded to include a target hammer and trigger, target stocks or grips (your preference) made of Goncalo alves, and shipped with a mahogany presentation case.

A factory letter would either state target grips or target grips made of Goncalo alves (like the ones on your Model 27-2).

I've only ever shot .38s in one of my .357s, my M640-1.
The rest of them get .357 loads.

That is a VERY NICE 27-2 you have there.

Why mostly .38's?

It's an "N" frame.

You could not hurt it if you continuously fired depleted Uranium ammunition.

Default Ya won't know until you Letter it!

Beautiful Model 27-2 you have. Regarding what a Letter will state you won't know until you actually Letter it.

Roy likes to toss a change-up every now and then. and I find it hard to believe that there is any other person that would be more "purist" than Roy.

Here's some examples among some of my N Frames that have been Lettered:

Model 25-2: 1972: Letter states: "checkered walnut target stocks"
Model 27-2 (blue): 1977: letter states: "smooth Goncalo Alvis Target grips"
Model 27-2 (nickel): 1980: Letter states "checkered Goncalo Alves Target grips"
Model 29-2 1980: Letter states "checkered Goncalo Alves Target grips"
Model 28-2: (1975): Letter states "checkered walnut grips"

all typos, and capitalization or lack thereof...are verbatim so what do you have on your gun, grips or stocks, Goncalo Alves or walnut......only way to know for sure.....send for a Letter.

PS: I find it hard to truly differentiate between the grips except for smooth vs checkered and the wood looks great to me whether walnut or GA.

Anyway....enjoy:

S&W never seemed to worry much about being consistent. Doesn't the label on the box have the word "Stocks"? And in that area, "TS" sure isn't an abbreviation for "Target Grips".

But since S&W isn't consistent in their terminology, we really shouldn't expect anyone else to be.

Please don't call them "scales", like the Brits do.
