And by the way, Mr. Buckeye63, I had to add some verbiage because the software won't allow a two letter word to stand by itself. So . . . "no" wasn't sufficient.

It is a hammer out of a bodyguard. Probably a model 49. My guess it was dropped and the hammer thumb piece broke off.

That makes sense. The Bodyguard was nothing more than a Chiefs Special with a frame that shrouded the hammer. Internal parts would be the same, but the hammer spur was different.

Or a Bodyguard Airweight or a Model 38 Bodyguard Airweight.

Availability and cost of standard J frame replacement hammers is driving some to use the less expensive body guard hammers as they usually sell for less than half the price of a standard hammer used in model 31s, 36s, 37s, etc. Seeing the number of standard hammers with broken thumb pieces (spurs) for sale on some of the auction sites it evident that many 36s and 37s have been dropped. The supply of standard hammers is drying up other than those that come from the folks salvaging parts from the evidence guns sent to the crushers.

Not exactly the case..... In the "olden days" we would do this modification to provide a hammer much less prone to snag in a pocket.

Some guys would simply grind off the spur on the original hammer, but this would lighten the hammer too much, resulting in unreliable ignition.

Hence...We used the hammer from the Bodyguard.
