Guess What?
I just purchased this revolver, and it is on the way to my FFL. Here is one of the seller's pictures. Entertaining guesses from the peanut gallery as to what I have purchased.

Since it looks like this gun before I replaced the stocks with elk I'm going to say a Model 10 .357 Magnum

It looks like a Model 33 (38 Regulation Police) to me.

But it's not the same frame. My Model 10 has a rounded top strap. Your gun's top strap is squared off. Hmmmmmmmmmmm..........

Yes. I figured "not even close" after I compared frames. Sigh......
The HB threw me off..............

YES! It is a .32 Regulation Police.
However, the seller was unresponsive to the two questions that I asked him:
1) Is it marked 31-1 inside the yoke?
2) Does the SN begin with H?
Guessing that it is a 31-1, and that it dates between '68 and '78 if the stocks are original and since it is a 4". I will know for sure once it arrives.
Here is a picture of the other side:

Outstanding! That is going to be a fun gun to shoot. It will carry well too for woods loafing and other such pursuits. Congrats.

You're gonna love it! I have one just like it and its a joy to shoot. Its not often you run across a 4" J-frame .32. Gotta grab 'em when you can.

That is my thought as well. A kit gun with more oomph than a .22 LR.
I absolutely fell in love with .32 after buying a Ruger SP101. I have shot many more .32 S&W Long through it than .327. I have been loading a Missouri Bullet 98 gr coated WC over 2 gr of Trail Boss.
For the new revolver I have already ordered a Simply Rugged holster as well as some J-frame targets from Jaruwan. As you say, it should make a good woods/desert walking companion.

Yep! Looks just like the Model 31-1 that recently sold in the Classifieds, but not the same one as the pix are staged a little differently. Very nice indeed!
I'm getting into vintage .32's now as I have just about enough of everything else. They don't come cheap, but what in S&W collecting that's really nice does come cheap?
Congratulations!

Here's a "fair-haired" sibling that is just a bit stubbier at 3 inches.

Very nice!
Yep a J frame with fixed sights and a 6 shot cyl can't be anything else but a .32.
They're never made or shipped in order, but 1969 unless it was assembled and/or shipped way out of order.

I own a 4" model 31-1 that I bought new in 1972 in Georgia.
Serial Number H17XXX. It's still in the original box and unfired.
Also have a box of ammo bought at the same time.
Bought it for the wife and she was never interested.

Is/was she just not into guns, not into revolvers, or not into .32? Seems a bit sad that poor revolver has languished all these years.

She just wasn't interested. It's probably been a better investment than the Bank savings.
