It's probably not wear. Nothing would cause it as wear. Someone must have honed the chambers.

Sounds to me like somebody diddled with something. I can't IMAGINE how that could happen thru normal wear-and-tear.

I don't know how it could get like that, but it's time to replace the cylinder. That one is junk.

Don't believe cylinder has been messed with. Think it came from factory with problems.

Welcome to the forum.

Nope, never would have passed the factory test firing because the cases swell into the cuts and are almost impossible to eject them w/o a rod and a hammer.

K frame 38 cylinders are easy to come by. Don't use that one. If the cylinder lets go it may ruin the frame or worse ruin you. Something happened to it. a normal 38 chamber leaves metal there.

What makes you say that?

Respectfully, unless you bought it new from the factory, how would you have any idea what has been done to it?

Since you say you think it came from the factory this way, that implies it had the problem when you acquired it. So did you inherit it or did someone give it to you? Paraphrasing Paul Harvey, "We need to know the rest of the story"!

Welcome to the forum as others have said, no way that would have came from the factory like that. My guess would be someone tried honing the chambers.

What????!!!! No!

I'd say Bubba was trying to do something extra special. Do not, and I mean DO NOT fire any cartridges in that cylinder.

Kinda like going to Auto Zone and asking for chrome muffler bearings. Or heavy duty piston return springs.

Here's what a 44 Magnum cylinder looks like after being bored out for use in the Vietnam War Quiet Special Purpose Revolver, or Tunnel Gun. This was ok because the round itself held the blast pressure not the cylinder so it was basically paper thin. The boring process is what ground through the thinner wall of the stop notch. The gun you are describing has most definitely had cylinder re-boring work.

Same question:

Do .38 Spl cartridges fit loose in the chambers?

With this Model 14 cylinder, it is now a necropsy. I'd love to see some pictures of the cylinder. Did someone try to deepen the locking notches or did they over-bore the chambers? Either way, the cylinder is dead, but it would make a good paperweight.

On the plus side, it has already been said that K-Frame .38 Special cylinders are not hard to come by.

Maybe someone was trying to rechamber for a different cartridge, say .356 TSW?

That is a possibility and they failed to account for the thinness of the chamber area beneath the stop notches. Bubba does not always do all of the required math in such endeavors.

Find a cylinder in nickel. Pintos are cool.
