It isn't that rare unless it has something special about it. It is rare enough to be a collector's item, but not enough to question the pedigree. IMO

The 25-5 was a regular production item for a number of years. Not rare unless you have an original 8&3/8" barrel. Only made a couple of those.

What is value of 83/8” 25-5?? I didn’t know they were scarce. I’ve seen several of them locally.

Agreed, though I'm not a collector and seldom refer to my S&W books. Some 25-5s may be harder to find than others, but I doubt any are really rare. I think these guns were made for quite some time. I bought my first one not long after they came out, about forty years ago.

As I recall, the 25-5s were quite popular when introduced and they had a pretty good following among law enforcement, at least for a while. I seldom shoot mine anymore, preferring the 24-3 .44 Special guns, but there is virtually no difference between the two cartridges from a performance standpoint.

My bad. I was thinking of a different model. Long 25-5s aren't rare.

I love the 25-5s and have a few of them, pictured here. Plenty of power for most purposes combined with very manageable recoil. I find the combination of the .45 Colt cartridge with the S&W N-frame revolvers made pre-hole to be very attractive.

I quit with 83/8” barrels unless they are a really good deal. I have a 25-5 61/2” & 83/8”. I dislike red ramp sights. My 83/8” is not pinned so I’m stuck with them. The 61/2” has Patridge blade.

I have a real nice 25-5 4" that I shoot quite often. I happen to like the red ramp sight, probably due to my aging eyesight.

I've owned several over the years. From what I see for sale at gun shows the longer barrel 25-5's are the most common. 4" barrel are uncommon and anything shorter than 4" would deserve a letter.

I had one years ago with a green ramp front sight. Wish I still had it!

A Model 25-5 was a grail gun for me for quite some time. A Navy Reserve buddy who was also a DPD officer carried one. I loved it!

Someone nice here on the Forum solved my search a few years back. The stocks are from bgmntmn on this Forum.

The SCSW says the 25-5 was in standard production in 1978 until the 25-6 in 1988. So they can't be exceptionally rare. It's just that folks keep them!

Bill,

Nice to see that blue rock again. I have missed it.

I still have one Model 25-5. A standard revolver with a 6” barrel. It will stay here until I find an ACP revolver I “must have”!

The 25-5 is my favorite revolver.

Always wanted a 4" but picked that one up many years ago on a trade for a Browning Hi-Power. Wish I had kept the BHP and just paid for the Smith, but...

I spent 10 years searching for a nickel 4" 25-5 with a pinned barrel. Saw this one at a local show about 5 years ago tagged at $450. Offered $375 and dealer (local pawn shop) came back with $385 OTD. So I settled for a blue one.

This one was shipped very late for having a pinned barrel. Went out in October of 1982. Must have had a stash of pinned 45 caliber barrels in inventory.

Just realized the dealer cheated himself. He should have accepted the 375 and added sales tax. That would have made it over $400 total cost.

The Model 25-5 isn't really rare enough to need a letter. Quite a few of them were made. However, they can be hard to find as this is another one of those models that people tend to hang on to. You just don't see them for sale very often. So they are desirable.

I'm a big fan of the .45 Colt cartridge combined with the S&W N-frame. I have 25-5s in 4 & 6" Barrels. A custom Model 28 converted to a 3 1/4" .45 Colt and a 5" Model 25-7. IMHO the 25-7 is the finest .45 Colt revolver S&W ever built. Absolute tack drivers!

Hard to tell from the photo, is that a new barrel or the Model 28 barrel rebored and rifled for the larger caliber?

Actually that started out as a 6" barrel for a 25-2 .45acp. I had to cut both ends. I'm really proud of that one. It started out a bare naked frame and I built it up myself.

Here's a better pic.

Good job on the 28. I have one I reworked to handle the ACP cartridge. I like the customized pieces.

So just how rare are 25-5's with 8 3/8" barrels? I recently picked one up at my local dealers a few weeks ago for $1500 AUD ($1075 USD approx).

Yeah, I have a 1980 production pinned 25-5 8 3/8" that I paid $500 for. No box or papers but it came with the original box of ammo. Only 12 fired down the tube. Target hammer, trigger and grips.

Is THAT rare?
