Default 28-2...."S" vs. "N" values

Given fairly equal condition 28-2s, both guns in very nice shape, how much more would a 6" "S" series be worth over a 4" "N" series? How does the barrel length play into value? About equal? Thanks.

That's a very interesting question because there are two variables. If the barrel length were the same, the S revolver would bring more. Just a wild guess, +$100.

If the s/n prefix were the same, the shorter barrel would bring more. Same wild guess.

So in the case stated in the OP, to me the differences should offset. I would guess though that you could still get more for the 4" one. How much, I can't even guess.

And a 5 digit N is worth a bit more than a 6 digit N, the difference between the two usually being a chamfered versus straight outside edge on the forcing cone

Interesting. That is something I never noticed. And I've had a bunch of Model 28-2 HPs.

Most us (the S&W gurus excepting), can only compare values of multiple guns online. That means we are effectively comparing what we "want" to pay to what other, less than expert buyers "willing" to pay - but - in the past.

For what it is worth, when I was looking for my one and so far only 28-2, I noticed that the price seemed to be determined first by condition, second by barrel length, and only after that by serial number or age, (except for unique examples).

In other words, people had paid more (completed auctions etc) for guns with a 4" barrel compared to 6", than for earlier S-prefix compared to N-prefix.

I bought an S-prefix, 6" barrel, because that seemed like the best value at the time (that and I shoot .357 better with a longer barrel).

Don't know what I did to the value of my S serirs 6" ND, when I swapped in a 4" pinned Highway Patrolman barrel, that color matched nearly perfect.

Because it's a '58 (birthyear gun) I'm its caretaker until death do us part, I wanted a 4"er, and they are getting on up there in price. Of course the old parts will stay together until that time, and then whomever ends up as its caretakaker can decide what they like.

I'm much happier with it, because it balances outstandingly, looks terrific and the 4" length vs 6", allows me to sit down with it holstered. I think I would still choose a 4" gun whether it was an S or an N.

I forgot to add to my post that either one would be a great gun.

Personally, I might go for the S prefix w/6" barrel as they are better if you plan to shoot them, IMHO.
