1964-5 Model 57 4 in Nickel
I am posting this because I am so impressed with the condition of the nickel... came with original presentation box and tools but no paperwork... Its a first year model 57, does anybody have the paperwork for sale that goes with it? Looks rarely fired and unhandled...

Welcome to the forum and that's a fine specimen you're showing in your first thread.
How long you had it? Your first S&W?

What's the SN#?. Someone here can date it pretty close, how do you know for sure it is a 1st year gun, did you already have it dated from the SN#? I see it also has a pinned front sight, that IS an early gun.
Beautiful finish, keep it wiped and wrapped with a silicone cloth and don't store it in the presentation case, it will stay as nice. What is the finish like on the muzzle? A nickel plating will sometimes start to flake there first if it's been shot very much.
And good luck finding ammo if you plan to shoot it. Starline is the only company that makes brass for the .41 Magnum, Hornady has a 210 grain XTP jacketed hollow point, and Berry's Bullets has plated 210 grain flat nose, 250 bullets for about $40, if you're interested in reloading for it. Bullet choices are pretty limited for different weights, somebody makes a 180 grain for it, but haven't found one yet.
I have a 6" blued M57 no-dash, "S" SN# prefix, made around 1968. I love shooting it.

My new model 57 nickel
I just purchased the revolver this weekend, i was looking for a shooter, but i cannot resist a nickel if its in descent shape... this looks new, no scratches, pits, flaking BUT for a small 1/8 spot on the top strap over the cylinder... I have attached a picture, it may have been from storing in the case, but i think it may have been a weak area when plated... the whole gun other then this doent even have handling or polishing scratches....
As for dating it, i am earlier then one online with a S&W letter by 2000...I am debating if it is worth getting an official S&W letter for the gun.... its serial number is S 248,874.....

I would check under the blue flocked "box fillers". Mine has a little ribbon to pull it out. Maybe the literature is under one of them.

I'd have to get a letter on that one. It will only increase the value for another collector, probably by more than the cost of the letter.

No paperwork under the fillers....
Are the grips Coke grips? When did S&W stop using 2 pins on the front site? When did they start grinding them flush before blueing or nickel finishing? When did they stop using the diamond grips? Its the earliest of 6 revolvers that i have... I used to restore motorcycles, and the nickel finish on this 57 is better then the high dollar rechromung I used to get from the quality restoration chrome companies!!...
I havent taken the grips off yet, are they usually numbered to match the frame on this era of gun? Lots of questions I cant find answers to on thr internet... Thanks

Bobwilly...The stocks are the coke bottle type that were used until being phased out in 1966. The pins on nickel plated target revolvers were not polished flush until S&W started nickeling the ramp base and blade around 1967 or so. Diamond targets were no longer used by very early in 1969. Target stocks were not numbered to the revolver.
The presentation case used for your revolver is the second type used for this model. The first type used dark blue velour to cover the inserts. The inserts on your case are covered with blue satin and the case probably dates to sometime in 1965. Not too much later, this model was shipped with a clamshell case that was used until early in 1969.

If you load for it, Sierra makes (made?) hollow cavity (their description) 170 gr. and 210 gr. jacketed bullets.
I used lots of the 170's on varmints back in the '70's when I was in college, but due to their cost I shifted to cast 220 gr. SWC's (Lyman 410459 - EK's design) and that's been my bullet of choice since then.
A good friend of mine swears by the 210 gr. for deer.
In any case, that is a very nive revolver! Enjoy!

Thanks for the information- it is hard to tell eith the pictures on the internet if they were coke grips or not.... i thought they were....the nickeled front site pins look good visually, an added ornament... the box cloth is a satin. So it is the case it came with- i think it is a first year judging by the serial numbers i have seen on line....it may be too nice to shoot as it hasnt been shot much at all... it is a really complete model 57....Bill
