Model 12-2 grips
Hello, one of the main reasons that I finally decided to go from reader to getting an account on this site is to post this question.
I have inquired at several grip makers about whether they actually make grips or not that fit properly. They all have been unable to or missing the gist of my question I would think. A few replied that their standard K frame grips would be fine. 12-2.jpg
My new to me model 12-2 has standard K frame grips and subsequently there is a gap at the top of each side of the grip. I'm going to attempt to post a picture that shows the gap well at least on one side.
I have only found one grip maker that seems to actually have the acknowledgement that my K frame requires a special accommodation. I have been on his revolver waiting list for a year or so, I just received some Hi Power grips from him after being on that list for a year and they are fantastic.
ETA: I have been impressed by the number of very knowledgeable people on this site.
Thanks!

I looked at a model 12-2 on the computer and yours must have an aluminum frame, it states this frame is .080 thinner than the standard K steel frame. It looks like you have about a .040 gap on both grips. I was not familiar with a 12-2 S&W but I think you have rather odd revolver thanks for posting it and your pictures are great and I learned something today. After looking at your revolver again don't think your frame is aluminum but looks like blued steel so I don't know what to say. Jeff

12 takes a non standard stock. As you now know standard K frame doesn't fit. Your situation sucks. I know of no source for a proper set of stocks. Only suggestion is watch Gunbroker and ebay and post a want to buy in the Forum classifieds. I bet somebody around here has a set he is willing to let go.

As stated by jrm53, the model 12 has a narrower frame than other K frames. You may have to find take-off grips from another 12. You may also give Jack First a call and see what they have.

The hammer is also thinner and maybe the trigger too. Dean

The Model 12 is a great revolver, but the grips can be a challenge. I believe if you look for some old threads on here there is at least one that references modifying standard K frame grips to fit the 12. The basic idea was to carefully sand the standard K grips down until they are narrow enough to fit. I’ve been thinking of trying the idea out on a really beat up set of grips, since I have a 12-2 with correct grips as a template.
Not all Model 12’s use the unique thin grip. The Model 12-4 has the same size frame as the other K frames, and therefore uses the standard size grips.
This forum is a tremendous resource, but it can be dangerous. There are a number of S&W revolvers I wouldn’t have thought to buy if not for learning about them here. That can get very expensive. I would probably have never bought my Model 12-2 if not for reading about them here.

The beauty of the Model 12, -1,-2 (and I believe -3) revolvers were the fact that they were the ONLY S&W K frames that used a unique frame and internals.
Thus, making them an unusual beast.
NOW, with all due respect....jrm53 is fuzzy on his statements.
BY DEFINATION, a model 12 is an aluminum framed revolver.
If it were steel, it would have been a model 10.

Yes. The Model 12, along with the Model 37 and Model 38, were Airweight revolvers. The frame is made of an aluminum alloy, which is what makes them Airweights. S&W tried, at first, to make the cylinders also of aluminum. That didn't work out so well.

Two solutions, ebay or sandpaper.
Model 12 grips have been on ebay recently, I know, I bought a pair of diamond magnas for my 1964 12-2 and they fit perfectly. Unbelievably their serial number was only about 1,000 off of my revolver. The same seller put another pair up the next week. This was in September so type model 12 grips into Ebay's search, maybe they are still there. It's also been on the forum that regular K frame grips can be sanded to fit.

I appreciate the replies so far everyone. I think that sanding down my current grips would be an interesting project. They are in very good shape otherwise.
I have a BK grip adaptor already and I think that that will suffice until my name comes up with Spegal's wait list. One year is down...

I was about to ask if sanding would make the grips too small with the grip frame showing around the edges from the side view, but looks like that’s not the case.
