Folks, there is a gent on the Texas Gun Trader selling his S&W 66-1 2 1/2 snub for $750, firm.

No, I'm not trying to get you to go look at it.

This is why.... pity it was abused so (and $750????)

You might be surprised what judicious of some needle files, sandpaper, and some Scotchbrite could do to that gun.

I wouldn’t be afraid to buy ( for a little less money ) that gun at all as long as there were not other problems.

I gave a really nice one to a good friend. He loves it and its the revolver he qualifies with.

The other handgun he qualifies with is his Ed Brown 1911.

Stainless steel firearms stain less than carbon steel, but are not immune to corrosion. It takes more effort (abuse) to do it, but stainless firearms can rust and can become pitted. Maybe it's just the camera, but those screw heads look a little buggered too. For $750, I'd pass on that one.

That is true. But it is still to expensive. I payed less than that asking price for a pristine 3 1/5 barrel 27-2 last year.

“Stainless” steel is of course corrosion resistant, not corrosion proof. Fortunately it is quite good at resisting day to day influences that quickly can mar blued carbon steel.

Unfortunately, when it does finally overcome resistance to corrosion, it does so with enthusiasm and instead of getting surface rust or freckles, it goes whole hog with deep pits seemingly instantaneously.

Typical. He looked in a book and it said $750 for a 100% gun so that's what he wants. It can be cleaned but it won't be perfect and it sure as hell isn't worth $750. At least I wouldn't pay that for a project gun.

You can get knock offs for 50 00 from Campell-Hausfield. I have one and it does fine except for being noticeably heavier and clunkier.
The Dotco brand are certainly worth the tariff imho...ive been using the same one nearly daily at my work for the last 15 years. Just put a couple drops of oil in the air inlet, hook up and go.

I got one from century that was a pitted rust bucket, supposedly it was from Puerto Rico. I sent it to S&W, the best they could do was blast a matt finish on it.

Looks like blood pitting.
I bought one that was pitted on the opposite side for $400 and sanded the pits out. I wouldn’t attempt the OPs revolver myself being the pits are relatively close to the logo. A mans got to know his limitations. I’d leave that one to a pro and only if I could get it for half the asking price or thereabouts.

Those pits are far beyond a die grinder or sanding out. It's going to take at least 1/32" off the surface to get those pits out. And it would leave an obvious beveled surface on the side plate and adjacent frame surfaces.

But micro welding would be the ticket. There's specialists that do this on firearms. That gun is a simple job and could look new again. The pits need very fine bead blasting to remove all of the black corrosion in the bits 1st, welding, leveling, and finishing to match the grit of the brushed finish.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I see a lot of potential for that one, but still a bit pricey.

I really enjoy buying the occasional (light) project gun - less so lately as I age. I wouldn’t offer more than $180.00 - $200.00 if I was feeling generous for that poor abused thing. Sheesh!

Just saw another guy on TGT selling a 66-1 snub... $1100!! Whoa... I kind of like those prices since I have a small herd of snub 66 Magnums.

But the one being sold does look in great shape for what it is worth.... or not worth.

Recognize the sell price is not always the buy price. Must look at completed sales.

I only have one 66 snub, but it's a 3" ordered by the Treasury Dept as I recall. And there weren't that many overrun guns to sell to the public. I wonder what those sell for now?

I would not pay 750 for that, butt I would be interested in it for say 500 tops. With some TLC, and some new screws, that could be cleaned up pretty nice I bet.

As an ocean sailor I found fighting rust and corrosion to be an ongoing job. There are varying grades of stainless, all used for different tasks. I don't know how it works for firearms but I've found on most things, the more stainless the steel is the less strength it has. Bumping up my rigging to a more resistant grade of stainless generally meant also going to the next size up on the rigging. I would imagine that corrosion resistance on firearms probably takes a backseat to strength.

Stainless steel guns can pit, rust, dull. Stainless isn’t so strong or tough even body sweat in the hot weather with a in the pants holster will dull the finish.

Using simi chrome polish will restore the stainless finish. I save the used soft cloth with the simi chrome polish to lightly restore the dull finish on blued guns.

I’d rather have nickel finish.

If the pitting and boogered side plate screws are any indication, I'd hate to see what the bore of the barrel look like and also the internal parts. Could be in nice shape or rusted. Frank

What next? They'll have to rewrite the words to one of Marty Robbins finest songs ever:

What is the bigger shame, condition or price?

I think the biggest shame is letting it get that way in the first place. It happens, though.

At today's exorbitant prices on old S&W revolvers, that gun would be $550-$650 in a gunshop or pawnshop in my area of N. Louisiana, with their initial investment in it being maybe $150-$175. I would give no more than $350.00 tops for it.

Not particularly the S&Ws I want to collect or use, N frame fan but there are plenty of people into guns that are plenty happy to have one like that whom don't mind the looks so much as it's functioning ability. back in the 1960s and 1970s, I had to have and did fast and fancy cars ( 1967 427 vette, 1968 big block camaro, 1971 Cuda 440 6 pack, Now any old used car that runs perfect and does the job is fine, don't care what it looks like. I would not pay that for that gun but if I owned it I would use the heck out of it. I do list some there and value my guns according to how bad I want to sell or keep them.
