Default 27-2...my New favorite

Snagged this guy in the past year or two. SN puts it around '64-'65 (S 240,xxx range). It came with the combat grips. I finally got a chance to hit the range with it today and I absolutely fell in love with it. I have a 28-2 with magnas and my middle finger takes a beating under the trigger guard but these combat grips were SOOOO comfortable. If I took my time I was able to hit exactly where I wanted every time- it's like the sights were adjusted just for me. Recoil was very manageable with Armscor 158 Grain .357 Magnums, and almost nothing with .38 specials.

I was a bit nervous when I originally got it home that it was refinished, or that the cylinder was as it has a slight plum color to it in certain light...but now I don't care. I love this thing.

Target is my first cylinder at 20 feet, with the .357 ammo. Apologies for the subpar photo of the 27-2.

I have shot 27s for years and they are my favorite of the S&W line. Once you get that big cylinder rotating in double action mode, the gun just takes over. They are so smooth and a joy to shoot. Congrats on a primo revolver. I bet you will acquire more in the future. I certainly have.

Plum coloration is not always a sign of a refinish, but is a sign that the blueing salts were weak or not at the correct temperature. Signs of refinishing would be roll marks that are no longer crisp and deep, but have very rounded and maybe smeared edges. Often the edges of the side plate and the frame will be slightly rounded too, giving the appearance of a wider gap between the two.

I'm with you on Model 27s. My Model 27-2 is absolutely my favorite range gun either on a formal range or just out in the field plinking. You can shoot it all day with thirty-eights and as noted above, DA fire is superb and it just hits targets without effort.

25 yards, 148gr WC handloads, DA, Weaver Stance. It's as solid as a rock.

Very normal for the cylinder release on Colts to be a plum color. Sometimes there is a little plum hue to the bigger parts too.
