Default Highway Patrolman Auction

For all the owners of multiple 28-2 examples in this forum, I think your collection just went up in value.

A Highway Patrolman from 1956 sold for almost $1600 in an online auction today, with box and papers, and no other special attributes, not NIB, etc. The rise from about $1K to $1500+ happened during the last hour of bidding... not something in my league, but I was watching to see how it went, and...

I am going to take a chance, since the sale is over, and post the link: S&W Highway Patrolman 4 Inch - Revolvers at GunBroker.com : 880259962

Off the cuff and without assistance from the “bible”, the model 28 was built to be a work horse in a caliber that was designed to be a powerful aid to law enforcement. It equals the model 27 in every way other then the high polish, optional nickel finish, checkered top strap and limited barrel lengths but priced where a department or individual officer could afford to have what was considered the best revolver for the job. It is no surprise that the model 28 has become an interest to collectors.

Well, that is a nice example of a pre model HP. I know that the days of buying one for 500.00 is gone. I have been known to collect a few

I don't really think that sale of a pre 28 in original box will have much effect on 28-2s

I believe I may have noticed some of your posts on the subject,... yes, definitely noticed one or two

I know the history, or at least some of it. I perused the 50 page thread on that subject here. I have also seen pics of some retail receipts found with the guns... $221.99 in 1980, and $107.50 in 1971. I have one modest example, acquired here thanks to a very patient seller, lightly used and well cared for, and not close to being a collectors item.

It's interesting to watch the bidding wars though. Especially since one of the bidders has a single review on GB.

edit: A few weeks ago a nice example of a 28-2, N5-something sold for about $1,500 with box and papers.

I bought mine in June for $500 from a local Pawn shop. It was on the shelf for $750, i asked what you can do it for and $500 otd was the reply. The young man who was the gun specialist went on to tell me how he knew all about guns and values. I gave him my number for any other smiths...

I bought a brand new HP Model 28-2 with a 4" barrel when I got back from my extended visit to the Far East (SE Asia, that is). I paid within a few pennies of $135. Should have bought six! I've owned a few used examples in both barrel lengths since then and there are still five or six in my safe. Great sidearms!

I recall buying a 4" in about 95% condition as a birthday present for one of my sons back in the '90s for $275. Yes, times have changed.

That auction was probably a birthday gun target for bidders.

Just imagine how much THAT would be worth now if you drove it maybe once or twice, and then stored it in a nice dry climate controlled box all these years... I mean garage, lol!

I know a guy with one in his basement garage; he bought it on coming home alive from SE Asia as a gift to himself. 1965 L78 (396) 4 spd, track package, positraction and side mounts, paid about $5200 for it. He drove it for a few years, but no power steering and the heavy suspension wasn't suitable for a DD, he said. He still takes it out to clean it and runs around the block or to a local car show now and again. Car has less than 20K original miles. He laughs bout the AM/FM radio option costing almost the same price as the 396 engine. It's Nassau Blue. I can't imagine what the car is worth; never been restored but looks fantastic. He's in his mid 70's now, refuses to sell it.

A week ago, a model 36 3" Target went for over $2300.
Wonder why?
It was NIB and the buyer had another NIB with consecutive serial number.

Three months ago, my LGS told me about a 28-2 6" that was due in the following week. When I went to the store to see it (I was given first opportunity), I expected to pay about $800.00. When he told me $500.00 (I buy from him often), I almost sprained my wrist reaching for my wallet. With the money I saved, I ordered a set of Grashorn Grips for it.

It is seen in my avatar.

I saw a 28 with Grashorn Grips at a gun show early last year, and I just could not get that image out of my mind.

Most of you have probably heard my oft-told story of buying an M28-2 "a few years ago" for $250. The next week, I saw one in another gun shop for $230 and thought to myself that if the first one was a good buy, how could I possibly pass up the second? it's nice to know that I can now sell either one for $500 or more.

But let's not get too carried away. I checked my records and those events took place in 2006. I did a little checking and found the Dow Jones was
12,198.01 on 10/01/2006 .......... (about the time I bought the guns)
28,400.86 on 10/01/2020 .......... (about now)

So if I had put the money in an index fund instead of buying two guns, I would have done as well, and probably better. Not to mention how much easier it is to buy and sell shares of a mutual fund.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I have the guns, but as I said, let's not get carried away.

This is where buying the best condition you can afford now. Down the road keep it and shoot it, or admire it, think of it as an investment we can never lose on.

Yes. And when I bought the new Corvette in 1970 for $5400, I was taking home $84 / week.

Look at the pic it has muzzle wear from being holstered? The ejector doesn’t sit flush? Dirty?

My BIL has a 62 vette sitting in a garage for 45 years he paid $2,900 for it. She’s worth over $100 k today I think.

Money means nothing to me. My family makes me rich.

As RGNewell said, I can't see what the price of a 1956 HP has to do with 28-2's.

Over a decade ago I seen m28-0 / m28-2, 6” in 99.99% sell for $695 each.
They were safe queens and looked like new.

I seen a ruger police service six in 357 with the 1776 bicentenial script go for $750. New in ‘76 it was $135.

I ran into a guy at a show several years ago with a 4 screw HP ANIB with papers. He wanted $300.00 for it and I told him if he'd take $250.00 he wouldn't have to carry it around the show. I still have it and a couple of more. It's unreal what some folks are paying for them now.

It’s the market demand plus there rare. We’re playing musical chairs with the older guys selling them to the younger crowd. Two decades plus ago we never seen used ones. I never seen used colts, ruger’s or s&w in 357.
The 357 is probably the most popular caliber on the planet?

My latest car cost more than my first house. All pricing is relative to affordability at the time of purchase. My social security check now is way more than my paycheck when I bought the house with $900 as a down payment

1969 Sedan Deville. My mother's. We lived 90 miles south of San Antonio and when I would go on a double date to San Antonio, we would take the Caddy. My parents would go to the beach on the weekend and I had my choice of the Vette or the Caddy. Living the life at 19.

My Dad had a '68 Coupe de Ville. 472ci V8...White with Navy vinyl top and leather. Every once in a while he'd let me use it...like for senior prom.

He let me use his 1950 Cadillac 4 door in high school and first year of college. We used to quadruple date in that thing. Oh the stories...

In 1972, the price through the Multnomah County Sherrif’s Office was $90. A model 19, or a model 39, was $110.
Now, that’s true value!!

I thought when we were on the gold standard it was 32/ounce. No matter, cheap enough. last year I sent a college ring back to the maker for resizing. They told me to insure it for 1600.00 because that was the replacement cost. I paid 40.00 in 1969.

Be aware of a shrill. They are a buddy who drives the price up. He bids with you.

I was bidding eBay and caught a shrill. I retracted my bid and down to the starting bid it went.

I should put one of my m28’s on gb.

They are N frame 357's.

I wish I could find a used 28-2 good condition 4" for $750. Just don't see them anymore at shows.

By me, everything is tactical or I stumble across a Smith and it looks bad cosmetically and mechanics I have seen go like new to not maintained...AND they want top dollar.

I recall the mentality of the time 10+ years ago when they weren't going for much...my opinion is that we knew it was undervalued then and took for granted that we would always be able to find a replacement.

When some guys start quoting retail prices, they are a half century old.
That is 50 years ago!

Back in May, I paid over $1750 for a first year HP. Come to find out, 3 years ago it when for $4888 with buyer's premium on Rock Island Auction before it got separated from its provenance. Gun was shipped to Major General Julian Hatcher at the NRA on May 10th 1954. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then.

They came through fine to my coal fired antique McLaptop!

That's about the best figure I've ever seen from a pair of Grashorn's grips. He really outdid himself!

It’s like there stuck in a time warp where nothing changes. Hey I bought nib n frames on clearance because they weren’t selling for $699 over 14 years ago. I forget I had cancer 12 years ago I did nothing for 12 years. Lost time like flying through one of those triangle places.

The insurance for 6 months on a 19 year old with a Corvette these days would be about what you paid for your car.

Talking about good deals on 28-2's. I would think who ever bought the one that was stolen form my home 3 years ago got a deal. The people who did it were caught but the gun was long gone. Pretty sure it was sold at the flea market. Hoping they will trade it at a gun or pawn shop somewhere some day so the serial number will be run on it.
