Really happy to have these two beauties join the S&W family here at our home. Heading out to the range tomorrow for a test spin. The 36-10 is for my wife to carry (Our 66 was just too big). The 25-2 is here to give us something to shoot while we wait for small pistol primers to re-appear on store shelves.

Default Range report

I'm always a little nervous buying a used gun, but these both turned out to be good buys. Especially happy with the 25-2. Once sighted in it was a joy to shoot. Great, light single action trigger. Feels like maybe a 2# pull. Wish I had a measuring tool. Very accurate from 25 yards. The double action pull feels like 20# though. Shot some lead cast bullets, and the bore looks shiny and new. No leading at all. A couple of the moon clips (out of 10) wouldn't allow the cylinder to close, so I had to grind off some burrs left from the manufacturing process. Maybe the best thing about this gun right now is that it takes large pistol primers, which we have an abundance of.

The 36 will make a great carry gun, but it has some sharp recoil when shooting self defense loads. Lots of bite between the thumb and index finger, right on the bony base of the thumb. We both noticed it fairly quickly. I Doubt we will use it much for punching holes in paper. My wife loves it for carrying though, and it's plenty small to conceal even with women's clothing.

Overall, very happy.

In the beginning with the factory Altamont grips with their sharp back edges my hand hurt too, right there, base of the thumb. I replaced those grips with old J frame Magnas which are thicker and well rounded on the back side. Mine developed a smooth and lighter DA trigger over time. I shot it a lot at the range and carried many times. There are other alternatives for grips in rubber from S&W and Hogue that work very well to asorb recoil and do not hurt the hand like the factory Altamons.

Skippyjon, Thank you for sharing your experience with your 36-10. That is very helpful information to have. We will no doubt be looking into different grips. We have the model 66 with the stock rubber combat grips that we both really like shooting. Even though they don't look as good as the wood grips, they shoot better in our hands.

I'm cruising the web looking for grips just now when I realized that I already have a set of grips that fit the 36. I had ordered some Altimont grips for an old I frame hand ejector I have, and ordered J frame grips instead of the correct K frame ones. I've had these grips sitting here in a drawer in my shop, so I thought why not give them a try. They feel way better already. Much thicker and a bit longer.

Most of my mistakes don't turn out this well.

I had actually just ordered some from Amazon when I found another set I already had, so I cancelled the order. If these new ones aren't any better, I'll be getting the rubber boot grips.

I put a set of Pachmyers on my wife’s 36. She likes ‘em.
