19-8 Special order?
Hey guys... new here and new to revolvers
I recently inherited a revolver and l'm looking to get any info on it that I can. I’m not familiar at all with revolvers more of a semi-auto guy so I may sell it but who knows... this is the info I have.. It's my understanding that it is a limited run for RSR of 213 units..... What is a fair value for this revolver?
.38 S&W special CTG. Stamped on the side of the barrel. Stamped 19-8 model number on the frame.
I have the original case it came in also with the tag with the barcodes and all the info still on it.
Tag says model 19
Cal .38
Barrel 4
Spec ord 0056
Product code 148926

Well that's already more info than the S&W Catalog provides. Looks like a turn of the millennium (99/00) gun.
I have no idea why RSR would have ordered such a configuration; seems like most of the K frame magnum models special ordered in .38 Special were intended for police or security roles, particularly overseas.

Bummer, kinda like inheriting a Corvette with a three speed 6 cylinder. Unique though.

If memory serves me correct, there was a foreign government, (? in S. America) that wanted .38's but with the enclosed shroud over the extractor rod. The Mod 19 fit the order.
The SCSW4 does mention (on page 219), 19-8, chambered in 38 Special with 2 1/2" or 4" barre, square butt, product code 148926 Spec order 0055 or 0056/ 2000 CDR2504 reported with same product code and special order number with round butt, box marked SPECIAL. And, on page 220, 19-8 chambered in 38 Special For RSR 213 units March 2000.

Welcome to the Forum
You may already know that your revolver was manufactured in a round butt configuration (though yours is wearing conversion grips). This is unusual for a 4" Model 19, as is the 38 Special chambering
I can tell you that your revolver was manufactured on February 25th of 2000
As to value, if you can find one of the collectors of the 38 Special chambered magnums (models 19, 68, 586, etc.), your gun would bring a premium over a standard Model 19
Unfortunately, to most of the handgun buying public, having a Model 19 that is made for 38 Special only is not something that they would pay a premium for

Question: Would the cylinder be the only thing different from a standard model 19?

The cylinder may not be different, but the cartridge marking on the barrel sure is
Smith & Wesson had been known to accidentally build some of these 38 Special revolvers with Magnum cylinders from time to time

Yes. The next year, it was offered with Chevy's first V-8, the 265 CI motor. That motor became available in the sedan and pickup in 1955. In 1957, it was replaced by the famous 283.
Yeah - beyond S&W, 1950 decade Chevys are my thing!
Well, then there are Jeeps (5 of them currently).

My dad had one of these and my understanding they were in fact ordered for a foreign security contract.
The one my dad had was marked .38 special, but it would chamber .357 mags...so, there is that.
