Default Nickel Highway Patrolman What do you know?

I am aware of the 5" Nickel 28-2's that went to Florida. I watched a video yesterday where a guy had a 4" brushed nickel that lettered that way and was special order going to Ithaca, NY.
Any information appreciated. Do you have one or have you personally seen any other?
Thanks in advance.

When I was working commercial security in Chicago in the late 70s, we had a number of guys who bought Model 28s and had them nickel plated.

The photo below shows one of the fifty-four Model 28-2s with a brush nickel finish shipped in July 1972. The red ramp was added later.

I have one that I presume was nickel plated with gold accents. I would not do that but the price was right and it is solid mechanically

Bill-The more I look at your satin nickel 28, the more I wish we had a “Love” button instead of just a “Like” button.

If I came across a really nasty looking, but fully functional 28-2, I would seriously like to have it Np3'd with the satin nickel look. A friend has an old Beretta .380 that he had done like 25 years ago, and it still looks perfect with a ton of rounds through it. All 3 of my 28-2's are too pretty and worth too much $$ to mess with though.

David Carroll had an original brushed nickel Model 28-2 in its original box for sale at Tulsa a number of years ago. It was near NIB and the price was $4,000 to $4,500.

A friend and fellow forum member has one. His has been "rode hard and put up wet." Mechanically it's fine but the finish has a lot of wear from use. He brought it to the Baton Rouge Symposium a few years ago and found out what it was.

I wonder that nickel finish is no longer offered by s&w if all the nickel gun out there will go sky high?

The world famous Smith & Wesson and colt nickel finishes are unmatched.

Nickel plated Colt's and S&W's were extra cost optional finishes when new and have always brought extra value on the resale market. I do not think that S&W's fairly recent discontinuation of nickel plating will have a huge impact on the resale market.

Other than those 54 and the FHP revolvers, I am pretty sure Nickel was not available or found on on the M28. Remember that it was supposed to be a more economical version of the .357 Magnum that became the M27; the M28 was called a "Highway Patrolman" when introduced for a reason. It was a working gun with fewer frills.

Seems to me I read somewhere on these forums that there were a handful of salesman examples made with a satin nickel finish in addition to the 54 for the FHP. It was not a factory optional finish. Hammer, trigger, stocks, and picking either a 4 or 6 inch barrel were the only options for the Model 28.

So basically, satin nickel would be correct for the factory nickeled guns and a high polish, shiny nickel was most likely be aftermarket?

Most likely. Factory nickel revolvers had an "N" stamped on the back of the cylinder and on the left side of the grip frame, near the bottom edge. Lacking these markings, it can be assumed that it is an aftermarket refinish of a blued revolver. Another giveaway would be nickel plated trigger and/or hammer. S&W left these parts color case hardened.

What is the S/N range associated with these?

S/N range is N28000 to N59000. All shipped in July 1972 to various distributors. Each has a 4-inch barrel, Magna stocks, and no N stamped on the grip frame or cylinder. The finish box on the end label on the box is marked NB for brushed nickel.

I don't believe there are any 28-2s with a brushed nickel finish that were salesman's samples even though it has been reported in the literature.
