Default New Addition: Another 28-2 4" NYSP

As always happens these days... I was pulled against my will to Armslist where I found a 28-2 NYSP looking for a new home. At $850..the price was a bit "GULP" so after some haggling I was convinced this NYSP had to join it's brother already in my collection and I was off like a prom dress to get it.

A lot more wear on the finish than the other NYSP and it needs a good cleaning but locks up tight and the action is smooth.

I couldn't help but photo it in all it's 70's glory. With some of the items it would of been carried with back during the Mayor Edward "How'm I Doin'?" Koch era.

Looks mighty fine to me! Congratulations! I also have many "gulp" moments when I see prices today. I have to stop and remind myself that I'm no spring chicken anymore and prices have been going up & up my whole life.

Then I think back to that old saying " you didn't really pay too much, you just bought early". That usually takes away some of the sting.

Nice looking photos too.

Any more, if I find the S&W I'm shopping for and come in under a thousand, I consider it a steal.

Nice revolver, I have a 6" M28-2, looking for a M27-2 with a 3-1/2", so I doubt I'll come in under a grand.

.

According to several sources to include Mr Jinks, they shipped in July 1979.

It is marked NYSP on the left hand side just under the cylinder on the frame. It's hard to see because I still take sucky pictures with a non-professional camera but it's there.

State Police would of carried the NYSP M28 guns sometime starting around 1978 to whenever the department ordered them to go to 9MMs...sometime in the late 80's is my guess?

People with more knowledge than me feel free to chime in and correct me if needed.

Well, there are no 400-500 dollar ones around. I have seen crazy numbers on some of these. I have 1 N prefix. The rest are 61 to 68 S prefix.

The fun is in hunting them down

Pretty sure the 681 followed the 28. Hugh Carey was Gov, late 70’s, early 80’s.

I believe they did ship from the factory with those front sights. I have two so far and both have them and others posted on here in original condition also have them.
Might of been a special request by NYSP to S&W?

My letter from Mr. Jinks says the target trigger, hammer, red ramp, and white outline sights on the NYSP guns were added after being shipped. I think having a letter is important on some of my collection just to verify the facts. It’s fun for me. Enjoy!
