Default model 48

Good morning,

My local LGS has a model 48 in the case. Blued, 6in chambered in 22 MRF. I was not able get it out of the case due to long line and time constraints on my end. Was this gun made to shoot both 22 LR and MRF? I'm not sure if it has two cylinders or just the one. I was simply looking at some ballpark values. They have it at $950 I believe. Just open for some thoughts. Thanks

J

Different bore diameter for the .22 LR and the .22 WMR. I paid that much for my 48 but less for my 648 brand new.

First, they can shoot 22 LR but require the fitted 22 LR cylinder to be installed. Some, not all, came with both cylinders, either factory suppled when shipped or returned to be fitted.

Value would be based on several factors: engineering version, 48, 48-1, etc., barrel length(4, 6, 8 3/8), accompanying items, as a box, tool set..., and condition.

so, a 4" 48 or 48-1 with factory original box, and a fitted 22 LR cylinder in 98% condition would be a steal at that price.....48-4 6", no box, etc., 75% condition, over priced by $3-$400 dollars.

Values for 48s seem to have popped up a bit in the last couple years. Last one I bought was a four inch no dash factory refinished 50 years ago with quite nice stag stocks. At the time the local Cabelas had four of them, all four inch guns, various dash numbers, all priced at $999 and none with box and papers. I bought the no dash for $900 thinking that was probably too much but didn't have a no dash and have a bit of an affinity for S&W refinished guns. The other three were gone within a week or so. Last I bought before that was 8 3/8 barrel 48-3 for $730 about two years ago. I think $950 is "too much" but I'm not sure you can find many in nice condition for less; certainly not where I shop. Here are the last two I bought. Also, for whatever it's worth, the six inch around here is the hardest to find; I'm still looking for one. Good luck.

Shouldn't be a problem; I've done it both ways, MRF cylinder added to a pre-18 and K22 cylinder added to a 48. Both work fine, digest both LR and MRF and I see no difference in accuracy. Good luck.

Is it the new Classic model? If it is then the price is close to the suggested retail price.

Default Model 48s

In 2012 I purchased a mod 48-2 6" in beautiful condition from the Gander Mountain store alongside Route 95 near Saint Augustine. I was there to pick up a mod 10-6 that had just returned from the Gander Mountain gunsmith in North Carolina where they had sent it to have some warranty work done. Two months earlier I had purchased the nickel plated 10-6 for $199 and at the same time purchased a lifetime warranty for another $30. Anyhow, as I was checking over the 10-6 the clerk said "hey we just got in a couple more revolvers on trade that you may be interested in." I bought both - a Model 10-8 3" ($299) and the above mentioned model 48 for $329; plus another $30 warranty. With Ahrends retro combat grips that 48 is a fantastic shooter. Friends at the range have shot it and then immediately offered to buy.
I hope you enjoy your 22 mag as much as I have mine.
Too bad Gander mountain closed that store; I liked picking up some quality guns at cheap prices.
