Tragedy or possibly 'saved'?
On a local forum I am a member of a guy has posted a 'Customized' 27-2 for sale.
He did not mention any details but I suspect this may have been done due to damage to the barrel and finish and this was done to 'save' it.
If not and if it was done to a 'perfect' gun then I consider it a tragedy - considering I am currently looking for a 6" mod 27!
Thoughts?

You didn't mention price but you should not have a problem finding a 27 that has not been “modified”.

Update: Owner 'voluntarily' had this done to a stock revolver.
I am NOT at all interested in it as I am looking for a nice 6" Mod 27 - unmodified.
Sitting down? He is 'asking ' $1100 for this gun.

He is asking about twice what it should sell for as a rough country shooter. It looks like a Metaloy type industrial finish which is extremely tough, and wears like iron. Anyone interested in a hard use carry gun this would be an option, but not for any where near what it would have been unmolested.

I agree with you on the price as is, for sure. If it is mechanically and functionally in good shape, it would be a darn fine $500 shooter and truck gun.

Well, if I were going to carry an N-Frame, that would be it. $1100 may be high, but good luck trying to find something like that for $500.
Refinishing it that way probably seemed like a good idea at the time. Who knows how many years of service and enjoyment he got from it.
No point in crying over spilt milk. He should take the best offer he gets with no regrets.

The barrel has been cut. NOTICE the stamping is not centered. But you can tell by just looking at it. BUBBA'd I wouldn't touch it.

I'm still of the "any mechanically sound N-frame is worth at least $500" school of thought.
Though the last two I've bought were both right at $400 OTD.
So I'd give $500 for that one in hard chrome 
But $1,100? NOPE, No way, no how.

LOL, looks like they cut it AFTER it was refinished.
Like I said I'd be a buyer at 5 maybe up to about 6 Benjamins - if everything else about it checks out, but anyone who thinks they're getting 11 bills out of that one is delusional.

Everything else aside, it's not EVEN worth 1100 $. I wouldn't object to owning it. It'd be a fun woods gun.. For less than half the price..

I wouldn't mind having it, actually, but not for anything close to $1100, of course. For $500? Yeah, the finish would make a nice carry gun that I would never have to worry about getting messed up.

Look at it from his perspective. He probably put about $1,100 into it. (Initial cost + shortened barrel + industrial strength refinish). Could be he has more than that in it. It's not uncommon for someone to want to recover at least what they paid out.
Also, as we all know, you can always come down in price, but you can't go up. So maybe he is doing a more or less reverse auction. IE, this month it's $1100, next month $1000, ... till someone buys it. I'm sure this happens all the time, especially when the seller isn't desperate for the money.
As I understand, it's still a seller's market, so maybe he indeed does think someone who is really late to the table will grab it for home defense, regardless of price. It sure would be better than a baseball bat.
As for the $400 -$500 suggested offers, I suspect the seller's response would be to stick those offers someplace that would make sitting down most uncomfortable.

Yep, customized firearms, just like customized and restored, vintage cars, are often worth less at resale than the money that went into them and that is especially true when the work is not professional quality.

I would take it for free as a project but I wouldn’t pay any amount of money for that. I’d rather have a heavily worn gun with original finish

Words cannot express my disgust at hard chrome or Cerakote on a nice gun. I would not accept it as a gift. Only thing worse is a Colt with the trigger guard butchered. I was once warned about stating my feelings on Fitz so we'll let it go at that.

Personally I love blued steel and wood. But I have wondered why S&W never offered a factory version of Cerakote or Hard Chrome, especially in dark blue or black. Maybe they thought they had it covered (more or less) by offering the options of nickel or stainless steel for most models.

Cerakote is a good choice for a well worn semi-auto pistol that needs a reasonably durable, yet economical refinishing. Hard chrome is the best plating that can be put on a firearm. It has wonderful surface hardness to resist scratching and provides the best corrosion protection to the underlying steel.
Why did S&W not offer either of these two finishes? First, Cerakote is a new finish for firearms and it is a spray and bake system, great for gunsmiths and DIY, but it is not looked upon as a premium finish. Hard chrome is more expensive than nickel, so factories used nickel plating as an upgraded finish.
