Default Does anyone carry a 3.5" 27?

Just got what I consider a good deal on a no dash 27. Rubber grips, I have thrown on a non correct set of targets out of my box of stuff.

I ordered a pair of elk and have a vintage never used t grip I'm gonna pair with them.

I can't believe how well I can double tap with it, or just how well I can shoot it double action. It is so much different than my 28 and pre 28. Smoother and can be staged to a just before break shot. Nothing at all like my k frames with action jobs even.

Im contemplating actually carrying it but wonder how many people find it a comfortable weight to pack.
I carry 2 different 3" k frames in el paso saddlery holsters sometimes so I'm not bothered by the capacity and in the humid Kentucky summer i carry a shield or scandium J frame.
Just looking for feedback.

Better invest in a stout belt, but if you are used to carrying the kframes the nframe will just a bit heavier and of course bigger. To me 27's are the best of revolvers as you have discovered.

Not any longer, but I still love shooting them at the range

Since the introduction of Scandium framed revolvers, the Model 27s have been removed from the carry lineup and replaced with the Model 327 Night Guard

Thanks to Scandium alloy the Night Guard is about 10 ounces lighter while carrying two additional rounds over the older 27s. The new 3 1/2" model 27s do also carry eight rounds and were manufactured in blue or nickel

Yes and my preferred method is an AE Nelson untouchable. It has a tie down on the holster and off side. When I carry on my belt I have a very good belt and also use suspenders. Larry

I would, but don't want to lose it to an evidence room if I had to use it. That's what the polymer M&P is for.

I have, in the past, carried my 27-2 with a 3.5 inch barrel. I carried it in a Roy Baker pancake holster and it concealed and carried very well. I only qualified with it (LEOSA) once. Its a nickel gun and almost too pretty to shoot. I also did not want to have it in an evidence room for an extended period in case of a unpleasant social encounter.

I have a blue gun also. I had the factory re-blue it about eight years ago and it turned out so well that I have never fired it. It was a LEO gun that had a lot of blue wear but did not look like it was fired much. The factory rep called and said it did not need any work or polishing, only stripping the blue and re-bluing.

I carried a 6+1/2" 28-2 at work as a casino security guard without problems. Just need a good belt and holster. Back then, I carried 3 guns mainly. The 28-2, a Dan Wesson 15-2 4" full lug barrel, and a Beretta 92. Along with all the other junk I had on my belt, radio, huge keyring, cuffs, ammo/mag pouches, and a small can of pepper spray, the weight of the gun was not a huge deal. I had some aluminum cuffs until I saw some loon break a pair of them, and I went to the police supply store and bought stainless steel ones.

Don't carry it, but I do like it. Mostly for fondling and polishing.

Upper left is a 27-2 with five inch barrel. Upper right is a pre-27. The stocks on the 3 1/2 incher were made by Grashorn Gunworks.

Not a Model 27 but I carry a Model 22-4 daily.

The black basketweave holster is new but will allow me to carry my custom Foothills revolver (round butt Model 28-2 reworked for the 45 ACP).

I would on special occasions if I had one. A 3 1/2" 27 is high on the list of guns I want . . .

here is the 27-2 i used to carry and it's replacement a 24-3 as much as I love the 27s, I like the 24-3 better and you can't argue with the 44 stopping power. use the DeSantis speed scabbard too. every time I leave home it comes along and I'll be 73 next month.

The only N-frame I carry is a 625 Night Guard. I wish I owned a 27 in 3.5 inches and had lots of friends hosting barbecues. I’d wear it to them in proper leather. Alas, I don’t have one.

I have to say it. A 3.5" N frame with Targets is too much wood. Conceal it?

When ever I carry any of my 3 1/2 " m- 27's or my 3" m- 629-2 I use my Simply Rugged pancake holster or an original Roys pancake holster . Both are very comfortable . Most of my shooter & carry K & N frames have Ahrends retro combat finger grove stocks on them and carry very well .

I carried my custom N-frame Model 25-2 in .45ACP, with the barrel chopped to 3 1/4" barrel back during my competition days, and it carried just fine for that, and for concealed carry at colder times of the year. Funny, no one ever told old "shorty" that it was limited either . . . so it always performed like a target revolver it once was! LOL I won a bunch of double action steel and pin matches with it back "in the day!"

BUT . . . YOU have a 3 1/2" Model 27. I do too but something is very wrong with mine, so I only carry it to and from the safe! It is the only revolver I own that I will not shoot. Sometimes I wish I had a nick on it or something, for I know it is a fantastic wheel gun.

TO THE POINT . . . not all 27- variants came with factory magnas, and nothing looks as nice and well proportioned on a 3 1/2" N frame than magnas do, so I encourage you to be on the lookout! Here's my 27-2 as it sits with its original magna stocks.

Congratulations on you getting one too!

PS: Elk stags, like these made for me by the forums' own Patrick Grashorn (aka "executioner") look great too on a short barrelled N-frame, such as I have on my chopped 25-2. BTW: The Tyler T-grip works great too when shooting DA.

All the best, Tom

I've had 27s for many years, including a 3.5". Any 27 would be a beast of a gun to carry daily.

Default N-frame carry

Back in the "day" virtually all LE personnel carried S&W 19's/66's or 27's/28's for years every day and never considered the weight to be a factor (of course a wide and thick leather belt was utilized) ..... until the plastic/polymer guns appeared. No problem with a good belt .....

You're exactly right- to a point. Few considered the weight, but... It's much different carrying a heavy revolver on a Sam Browne belt. I would guess that few civilians wear a Sam Browne or anything that comes close to such a belt or the heavy duty holsters that go with them.

When I was a LEO back in the 1980’s, I carried a Colt Government Model in a Sam Brown leather rig. The Colt is probably a few ounces lighter than the 27 3.5”, but I hardly noticed the weight. Of course I had all the other “accessories”, like extra mags, cuffs, baton, radio, etc. A good heavy leather belt with keepers makes a world of difference.

Personally, an N Frame is not really a CCW - at least to me. If you are walking, camping or hiking in the woods then I absolutely would carry it! However for standard EDC, it's just way too large, bulky and heavy and I doubt you would keep doing so for long as there are way better choices for EDC that utilize the same ammo.

In warm climates or warm months it would be a boat anchor and hard to conceal. Hey, that's just my opinion and I'm sure others will tell you how they have carried theirs for years (in total comfort). To each his own....... It just makes little sense to me when you can carry a gun that is half the weight and bulk that will shoot the same ammo.

There is a reason S&W developed the K-frame 357 Magnum.

I, too, love the 3-1/2" Model 27s...they are beautiful and intimidating! I have a couple (27-2s), but they are heavy for EDC. I usually carry either a 642 or M&P PC Shield 9mm in the pocket of my shorts- but if I feel that I need more gun, I prefer my 627-5 with a 2-5/8" bbl, 8 shots of .357, and Crimson Trace stocks. Here in Florida the weather is often hot and steamy, and the SS requires a lot less maintenance.
