Hopefully an easy one

A 2" Model 36, 3 screw, .38 spl, fixed sights. S/N 526XXX. Nothing on the yoke, except for MOD. 36.

From what I could gather from the interwebz, it was made in the late 60's, but can't narrow it down. Can the year it was actually made be identified?

Shipped 1967 -1st half of 1968.

If I use the #526XXX, I get the same answer.

It's been a hard worker its entire life!

The 3rd Edition of Standard Catalogue of S&W indicates a range in 1962 at #295000 and 1969 at #786544. Sorry I can't help you with the actual year it was made, as I have no other source for info.

It's a former NYPD backup/off duty/plain clothes piece. I bought it from a former NYPD LEO, who got it from somebody who retired.

I've heard tons of stories that when all NYC LE agencies went to semi autos, the NYC area was flooded with these, and Model 10’s, and people were selling them for as little as $25. Gun shops wouldn't take them. Even in the shape this one's in, they sell for a lot more than that now.
