Inherited older S&W Model 36
Just inherited this S&W Model 36 (no dash), serial number: J873xx, pinned barrel, hammer-mounted firing pin, bright blue finish is 90-95% condition, with no box/papers.
The gun looks unfired, though it does show slight turn line and minor marks. I'm thinking manufacture date around 1980 (?). What are these older snubbies worth in today's market?

I think they are more like $500 or so in today's market.

If you listed the serial number correctly and it has 6 characters, it dates to around 1970.

I agree with "s&wchad," 1969 or 1970.
I disagree with the others' estimates. I follow the auctions on these as if they were my children. $600+ all day long.
But if you're like the typical heir you'll take it to the local pawn shop and get $300 or less for it.

Looks more like 95%+ to me and agree on estimates of $500-600. Older Smith in that condition has only one way to go in price, up! Everyone needs at least one snubby.

$600+ is my estimate, I have one in the original box, cleaning brush, and original sales receipt. Not for sale.

Of course, I'm hungry. I'm down to a single Chiefs Special, a square butt that now wears ivory (thanks to a member on this forum) and still lives in my safe. The rest of them are gone; I keep giving them away. But, hey, relatives need carry pieces and I do get to see my old guns once in a while.

The first S&W revolver I purchased was an M36-1 3" for $79 from Sacramento Armory back in the eighties. No box, just the revolver. My daughter was visiting us a couple weeks ago and needed a gun for protection in her town, which was having riots at the time. You guessed it, she took the 36-1 home with her. She shot it very well. The only model 36 I have had, but I have other models, and the m36 fit her hands just perfect. What does a dad do?
