Trying to identify this. Tyler has the size 3 and 3R but does not list an adapter using a "star". This one does not fit my K frames, either round or square butt. Plus, it has deeper finger grooves that all my other Tylers. Any ideas?

I have not seen one with a star stamp.

They were made to fit a variety of S&Ws and Colts, maybe others. Just keep trying different revolvers until you find the one it fits!

I don't recall seeing one with a finger grove. The shape with the bottom seeming to be forward makes me think Police Positive.

Not a fan of Tyler adapters, but I do have one like that, purchased new in the '70s or '80s. Mine fits a J-frame.

Sure looks like a Tyler to me. I couldn't find a fit chart, but I'll bet it's for a S&W .38 M&P Airweight (Model 12-3 or earlier).

The aluminum frames on these were about .080" thinner than a standard K frame. S&W increased the frame width on the 12-4 (1984) and made it the same as the other K frames. The earlier M&P Airweights also took unique stocks that had a smaller step at the circle inserts (washers).

This definitely looks old enough to be an original Tyler, so what the new Tyler outfit does or doesn’t list may not be relevant. While the finger swell does indeed look more prominent than the ones I have, I still think it is an old Tyler. It’s not a modern BK, there was no other official manufacturer, and somebody with experience in aluminum shaping would be unlikely to stamp model numbers on a home project. But the appearance is a bit coarser than Tylers usually are.

Just keep trying it out on different models.

I have a T-Grip with that exaggerated finger groove (maybe not quite as prominent as the OP's).

I have found that the size of Tylers doesn't always matter. I think I have a K size on an N frame right now. It's like the old saying, "If the T-grip fits..."

My father put a T-grip on the K-22 he bought circa 1955. I inherited the gun but never shot it, and traded it off a decade or two ago. But I kept the T-grip for some reason. And when I started making the BK adapters, I came across the list of Tyler sizes and discovered that the adapter my father bought (almost certainly from Goodman’s For Guns, the largest gun store in St Louis at the time) was actually supposed to be for an N frame. But it worked fine on a K frame all those years.

Not to surprising that the N and K are somewhat interchangeable.
The front profile/shape of the grips are the same. It's the upper section of the rear near the horns where they are different.
