Rough value estimate model 63
I am thinking of parting with my pinned and recessed 1978 S&W model 63 in 22LR. Very conservitively , let's say 90% condition, excellent bore, square butt, original stocks, and 4 inch barrel. What are these going for? There are none that I see in various classifieds exactly like mine. Gun Broker has a bunch listed north of $1,000 with zero bids and one that is currently at $731 with 32 bids.

That pretty much sums up the market value; under a grand..but north of $750.

Those are classic pistols. If as described, it would have $899 on the tag at my LGS's . . .

Wow! I don't have near that in it! I thought those prices were nuts! It is going to be a bit less painful selling it now. I just retired a few months ago and the wife lost her job yesterday. This is just a toy so out it goes. Thanks for replies. I do like a square butt J-Frame though; I have a Square Butt model 37 Airweight as my everyday carry piece.

Rough value estimate model 63
I bought this one for about $700 a year or so ago - purely as a tag along shooter and plinker. I would rate it about 95% with no box or accessories. Cleaned it up good, put the target stocks on and am thrilled with it. You just can't rough these stainless guns up - they always look good.
Hope this helps ......

I will sell to local gunshop for the right price. Too much of a hassle selling handguns to individuals. More money probably but way more effort and headaches too.

Any idea what being a snub would do to the equation ?
Has box and factory Uncle Mikes but has been polished a little.

2" barrel would put it well over $1,000, to the right buyer . . .

Paid $940 for this one about a month ago and am very happy with it. Put the banana grips in my wood box and it wears Spegels now. Great little shooter.

Model 63 are great revolvers. I bought my 1981 model (pin barrel, numbered grips, no box) 6 years ago off Gunbroker from a dealer in Georgia. Winning bid was $675 + $25 shipping. Found some square butt J frame target grips on ebay for $45. I don't see them often at gun shows or shops but when I have they are usually tagged at around $900+.
Hope this helps.

I got my 63 at Tulsa a couple years ago in the box for $600.00. Seems like a real good deal now. I put the Badger grips on it for my ham hands.

Yeah, the snubbys are certanly fetching a premium over and above other bbl lengths. At least in the auctions I check out from when I was looking for a M34-1 snubby, or a M63 if I got lucky (I didn't).

I got mine about 30 years ago. I will not say what I paid for it, but it was a nominal amount.

Not a 63 but it's similar. A 651 in .22 magnum. I paid $510 plus tax at a local shop about 8 months ago. I feel like I bought it under market. Be prepared to take a 30-45% hit if you sell to a gun shop. If you sell it here to a forum member all you pay is transfer fee from your FFL to buyer’s FFL. Shipping cost is usually paid by buyer.

Yes - Swing point on a 4 inch about $1,000.
2 Inch- around $1,200.
Buy below the Swing Price- Silver Tongue Devil living large!
Above - Your Just Rolling With the Flow.
I love that song!
Saw him sing it in Vegas.

Better to see if they will take it on consignment. I've sold several guns by taking them to a local shop. They charged me 15% of the sale price and handled everything. I told them what I had to get on my end and they priced it accordingly. They do have to put it in their books but it does simplify things for you.
If you sell it to any shop out right you likely will stand to loose out on several hundred more dollars than what you'd get in a private sell.

Well, at least $731 for that particular example, not necessarily $750+. One never knows who's looking when one is listed. Could be more, could be less.
Perhaps I'm behind the times, but I'm thinking 600 would be more like it for something that is "90%+". (90ish is a gun that shows obvious signs of use in my book.)
If it's more like 98-99%, add another 100-150.

A couple weeks ago I walked into a local shop five minutes too late. They sold one for $700 plus tax/background check fee. Just the gun, no accessories, excellent condition.

That's like walking out on the fishing pier and someone says, dang they just quit biting 5 minutes ago!
