I’m asker here first what’s a s&w m34-1 22lr 1970 revolver worth..? In 98/99% condition with some wear on the edges. The owner is asking a lot for it. Is it a k frame?

He has a s&w m28-2=4” barrel in 97/98% condition too. I’m not sure about the 4” value? Again he wants as much as the m34-1.

The hits just keep on coming I like both. I like 22’s but I’m drawn to 357’s too.

The 34 is a J frame and can either be 2 or 4 inch, round or square butt, blue or nickel and each will have a different value. The 28 4” has become more desirable as years have passed. You comment about prices but never said what the owner is asking...

The m34-1/4” barrel is $895 the m28-2/4” is $895 also sounds really close to the high end price wise on the m28-2, the m34-1 I’m not sure on the value. I could guess but opinions here are better.

I always say a good buy on a N frame magnum is $1,000 and under I’m talking about a 5”/6”/6 1/2” barrels. At onetime the 8 3/8” barrels were cheaper but the 4” barrels being more desirable I question the price or average going rate.

The Kit Gun is priced in the right range. Does it have a blue or nickel finish?

The 4" HP is near the top end. As Ken pointed out, the popularity of these is growing, but I'm not sure I'd pay $900 for one, even now - and I REALLY like them. I walked away from one last year at a gun show that was listed at $750 for just the gun and the guy wouldn't budge. The most I ever paid for one was $550 and that one was ANIB with all the original goodies. It's still in the safe; maybe I ought to sell it.

I bought a 34-1 4" SB nickel about two years ago for $500. Mine is newer than the one you are looking at and thus not pinned, which might account for the price difference. I also have a 27-2 4 inch, and if I had to pick between a kit gun and an N-frame .357, I'd grab the kit gun without a moment's thought. The 27-2 is so big that it never goes anywhere but the range. The kit gun is light, handy, cheap to shoot (or at least it used to be) and actually pretty useful.

Yeah a 99% 34-1 is not too common.

For the same money, I'd get the 34-1. 9 bills for a 28-2 is pretty steep.

I bought one you couldn’t tell had been fired about two years ago at a LGS. It’s a square butt 4” nickel With original stocks and paid $700 if I recall correctly. I’d have to look but I think it’s a 1970. There’s another guy that comes to the shows that usually has a dozen or more 34’s and 63’s. Typically a well used one will run $800 up to 99% as high as $1200. I feel he’s suffering from wishful thinking but he sells some.

I have both the 34-1 and a 28-2 / 4” I bought new in 1977. I found the receipt recently and paid $175 for it new. It’s a great gun and a joy to shoot But so is the 34. The advantage of the 34 to me is casual plinking with it and being able to feed it much for much less than a 38/357 especially in this day of outrageous ammo costs. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a self defense gun, a 357 is a much better choice.

One thing you might consider if you want a 22, a new 617 is about the same price or a new 63 or even 317. I have a 4” 617 that is outstanding and my wife has a 317 she absolutely loves. You’re talking about the same or less money for the above.

Edit: I’m happy to report I’ve put a good bit of ammo through that model 34 and enjoyed it tremendously.

The J frame is larger than the k frame? Both guns are blued. I’ll peek at the new ones too.

I bought a really nice model 28-2 with target stocks, trigger and hammer for $500, 5 years ago. The main thing here is 5 years ago. Kit guns and model 28s were way cheaper 5 years ago. Heck, just 2 years has made a real difference

The model 34 22lr have always commanded a decent price that is constantly going up too.

I could not tell you a thing about a M34. but the day of the 500.00 model 28 is long gone. I have seen them go as high as 1300+.

N or S prefix serial number? Box? tools?

If it is truly a 97%+ 4" buy it! You will not go wrong

Don't know what region of the country you are in, but around here both the Kit Gun (34-1) and the 28 are now far beyond the $500 to $700 range, and "virtually" (pun intended) zip are available except on big auction sites on the Internet.

I would say that your Seller is probably correct in holding firm for $900 on both....at least for a while during these days of "sellers market". Of course ammo for either is another large problem at the moment, but 22LR maybe a lot easier (and cheaper) to find locally. We are all out of most all calibers locally and what may be found is grossly expensive to say the least.

Some things to consider:

On the Kit Gun, Model 34-1, mine is a 1972 (s/n M51XXX) and round butt, with conversion or "target" type stocks. It is a very sweet shooter, and the whole family loves it. Does the one you are looking at have diamond stocks, serial number letter prefix?
These will help date it, and may affect price, but opposite of lowering price.

On the Model 28, mine is typical standard, satin blue, 4" and shipped October 13, 1975. As others have said, when will you see another like the ones you're looking at? and if your answer is "I don't know" then the current price is not relative, because they aren't going to be any less in another year or two, so if you can wangle the loot (PBJ sandwiches and soup isn't that bad...or MRE's from Cabela's if you have to).....buy both. Offer $1,500 cash on the barrel head for both if the seller is local and you can meet face to face.

Good luck..and look on the bright side..your dilemma is one several of us may like to be facing at these times.

The Standard Catalog lists the Model 34 value as $850 as new in the box, meaning unfired since purchase, perfect with no wear markings, with box and all included papers and tools. Excellent condition would mean same basic condition, but a fired gun, and $700 value; VGC listed as $550. Yours should be in the upper part of the range, but I'd offer less than the ANIB price.

Personally, I'd go for the M28-2, I gave $1000 for a pristine 1973 date 6" model almost a year ago.

Just my opinion, but I think the Standard Catalog value does not reflect the current high demand and low to nonexistent supply.

I have a 34 no dash dated 1959, early J frame, 99% but no box or papers, diamond grips numbered to the gun. I turned down a $900 offer.
