Default J-Frame grip screw question

I have a Model 36, ser #553684 and I am having a devil of a time finding the a correct grip screw for the factory grips. The screw is a narrower diameter than the screws in some of my other j-frames, I know the grips are correct because they are numbered to the revolver. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

(I hope this in the right spot, not sure of date of manufacture).

Yup it is a smaller diameter screw.
A bit harder to find.

Suggest you post a WTB.
As Paul stated they are out there.
Smaller dia measures 0.093” where the larger one measures 0.107”.

Square butt. I have had a thread posted in the WTB months ago with no luck.
(no wonder, I just looked and the thread is closed, so I reposted)

Let me know if you need more pictures.

Thank you for your comments.

Now to find a screw!

Have you tried eBay or gunbroker?

Surprisingly, I've found Model 36 parts on both platforms.

Good luck on your hunt.

Go to Numrich (AKA Gun Parts & Firearm Accessories | Numrich Gun Parts). Good chance those guys will have what you need. They have lots of stuff.

Hmm. Interesting. Why did S&W use different sized screws on their j-frames?

I’m sure the forum member will send you the right screw, but on the off chance it isn’t, send me a note, pretty sure I have a spare or two lying around. Be happy to give you one if you still need it.

OK, two very generous attempts at solving my problem by fellow forum members have met with no luck, one screw was the right diameter (.093) but a tad short and the other was the thicker screw. Numrich does not differentiate in their schematics but it doesn't matter as they are out of stock on all Model 36 grip screws. No luck on ebay either, I even went as far as looking to buy a set of scrapper grips to get the screw, but most of the square but grips are pricey, and the pictures often are not good enough to discern screw size. UGH!! Who thought it would be this difficult?

Thanks to those who have responded in the thread and thanks to those who have sent me a screw...I am grateful AND STILL LOOKING!!

Merry Christmas!!

Have you tried Jack First Gun Parts? I have had luck with him in the past. I would call them, they have many one of a kind parts not listed on their website. You might also try gun-parts.com.

Round butt grips were also made with the smaller screw, so look at RB junkers also.

I've gotten a couple of the pre 1970's correct skinny 3-48 tpi screws from seller hoxycarman870 on ebay. The later screws used were fatter 5-44 tpi.The item number is...254655927346...not cheap at $18.00 each but you won't find them at the hardware store,at least I didn't.

Another alternative might be locating a fastener supplier in your area...That does not mean a hardware store nor a big box store such as Lowes...In the Houston vicinity where I live there are several, and most are warehouse size where I've found many fasters for my automotive projects...I've never searched for grip screws there, but the next time I'm in Houston I might schedule a detour for a few of my screwless grip panels......Ben
